Second Half Rally Falls Just Short As Men's Basketball Falls To Hunter

NEW YORK, N.Y.  - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball second-half rally fell just short in an 83-77 defeat by the hands of Hunter College on Monday evening in a non-conference game.

The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Falcons.

Four players scored in double figures for the Falcons, led by Tazhon Daniels (New Haven, Conn.), who scored 15. Deivone Tanksley (Hartford, Conn.) had a double-double with ten points and a career-high 18 rebounds.  Jayquan Kirkland (Stratford, Conn.) scored 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) had 13 points and seven rebounds.

  • HOW IT HAPPENED
    The teams matched three-pointers in the first minute as Corey Jones, Jr. of Hunter and Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) each hit their first attempt of the game. 
  • After the early tie, Hunter scored the next 11 points, including five by Casey Meyers.
  • Albertus fell behind 16-10 with 14:28 remaining in the first half, but went on a 10-2 run, capped by a three from Tanksley to give the Falcons the 20-18 lead at the 12:35 mark.
  • The Falcons led one more time at 23-22 after a layup from Tanksley, but Albertus committed a foul on a three from Gene Propper. Propper hit all three attempts putting Hunter back up 25-23.
  • Albertus briefly tied the game on the next possession on two free throws from Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.), but a 14-3 run, including two three-pointers from the Hawks gave them their first double-digit lead at 39-28 with 4:59 left.
  • Hunter extended its lead to 49-32 with 2:11 left, but the Falcons were able to score the final six points of the half, five of them coming from Tyrone Cummings (New Britain, Conn.) to make it a 49-38 game at the half.
  • Hunter scored the first ten points of the second half to take a commanding 59-38 lead with 16:18 left. Albertus scored the next six points, but Hunter pushed the lead back out to 74-52 with 7:56 left.
  • The Albertus offense then took over, going on  23-3 run over the next 6:41 and cut their deficit to 77-75 with 1:15 left as Kirkland scored ten straight points during the run followed by six of the last seven points of the run scored by Daniels. 
  • On the next possession, Hunter's Kareem McDonald hit a jump shot and was fouled. He sank the free throw with 21 seconds left to put Hunter back up 80-75. Albertus got it down to four points at 81-77, but Hunter made its last two free throws to seal the win.

NOTEWORTHY

  • It was the first meeting between the two teams.
  • Kirkland has scored in double figures in his last two games, averaging 17 points per game during that span.
  • Albertus grabbed 54 rebounds, the second most in a game this season.
  • Tanksley had his third double-digit rebound game of the season and the season game-high for a Falcon this season.
  • The bench scored 41 points, which was the second straight time the team has scored over 40 bench points.
