Men's Basketball Defeats Rivier For Sixth Straight Win After Huge First Half Run

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's basketball team scored 24 straight points in the first half and won its sixth straight game in a dismantling of Rivier, 89-62 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game inside The Nest on Saturday afternoon.

Two Falcons finished the game in double figures as Justice Washington (Hamden, Conn.) had 25 points and 12 rebounds and Deivone Tanksley (Hartford, Conn.) had 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Antonio Bonilla (Tenafly, N.J.) had 14 points and Malcolm Duncanson (West Haven, Conn.) and Kevin Crawford (Bridgeport, Conn.) each scored 13.

Albertus is now 15-3 and remains undefeated in GNAC play at 7-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Raiders took a 7-2 lead just 64 seconds in before a jumper from Tazhon Daniels and a three from Bonilla tied the game at 7-7. 
  • Rivier took a 12-9 lead with 16:36 on the clock and from there, the Falcons ran away from the Raiders from there, scoring the next 24 points.
  • During the game-changing run, Washington scored eight points, including six straight. Bonilla and Crawford each scored five in the run. Crawford put an exclamation point on the run with a dunk which made it a 33-12 game with 9:56 left.
  • Rivier got back to within 14 in the half until the Falcons immediately went back up 20 at 45-25 with 2:49 left. The Raiders got to within 12 points when they scored eight straight, but a layup from Washington put Albertus up 47-33 at the half.
  • Rivier cut the game into single digits twice on three-pointers from O'Darius Cade .
  • Albertus led 50-41 and turned it into a 64-45 lead over eight minutes capped by a layup from Saikwon Williams (Norwalk, Conn.) at the 9:35 mark.
  • The Raiders never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way and Jeyson Slade (Stamdord, Conn.) put an exclamation point on the game with a three for the final basket of the game.

  • It was the 55th meeting between the two teams. Albertus now leads the series 37-18, including the last 22 games.
  • Washington, a double-double machine, earned his 11th double-double of the season.
  • The Falcons are 8-0 when scoring at least 85 points in a game this season.
  • It was the third time this season the Falcons shot at least 50 percent from the field.
  • The Falcons had its best game of the year from the free-throw line, shooting 85.2 percent (23-27).
  • Albertus remains in first place and is just one of two teams undefeated in conference play.
