Men's Ice Hockey Rolls to 3-1 Road Win over Rivier

NASHUA, N.H. –  Sophomore Sam Anderson (Calgary, Alberta) tallied a season-high two points on a pair of goals to guide the Albertus Magnus College men's ice hockey team to a 3-1 road victory over the Raiders of Rivier University on Saturday evening at the Conway Arena.

Along with Anderson, freshman Aidan Patterson (Redondo Beach, Calif.) also found the back of the net for the Falcons, while Cameron Weitzman (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) finished with two assists for two points. 

Joseph Giacobbo (Deptford, N.J.) earned his third win in goal for the Falcons and finished the evening with 20 saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Despite outshooting the Raiders in the first period, 8-5, Albertus could not take the early lead with the teams headed into the first intermission tied at zero. 
  • Albertus finally broke through at the 17-minute mark of the second period as Anderson found the back of the net against the Raiders' keeper on a power play opportunity, giving the visitors the one-goal lead, 1-0.
  • Anderson's tally was his 10th of the season, while Weitzman earned his 13th assist of his senior campaign.
  • Seven minutes later, Albertus' Weitzman took advantage of a bad giveaway from the Raiders and found Patterson, who would score his first collegiate goal with 8:40 on the clock to give the Falcons' the two-goal advantage, 2-0.
  • Solid goaltending from Giacobbo kept the Raiders at bay for the remainder of the frame, and the Falcons led by a pair at the end of two.
  • Out of the intermission break, Rivier erased its two-goal deficit in half, 2-1, following a goal from Josh Sanchez just 32 seconds into the third period. 
  • Following the goal by Sanchez, Albertus resumed control of the puck and began to pick up the intensity outshooting the hosts 14-8 heading into the final two minutes of regulation.
  • Anderson put the game out of reach for the Raiders by scoring the Falcons' third and final goal of the game on an empty net opportunity.

  • Albertus won the advantage in shots, 25-21. 
  • The Falcons went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Rivier went 0-for-3 on power play opportunities.
  • Albertus was whistled for only three penalties, compared to Rivier, who had five penalties. 
  • The blue-and-white won the battle in the face-off circle, 39-22.

NOTEWORTHY

  • This is the fourth all-time meeting between the programs.
  • Albertus is now 3-1 all-time against Rivier.
  • Tim Manning (Concord, Ohio) finished with a team-high four shots, while Bradey Farrell (Burrillville, R.I.), Stephen Kyrkostas (Long Island, N.Y.), and Owen Allan (Ancaster, Ontario) tallied three shots each.
  • Giacobbo has recorded 20+ saves on four different occasions this season. 
  • Weitzman recorded his fifth multi-point game for the Falcons.
  • Anderson posted his fifth multi-point game this winter. 
  • Patterson made his collegiate debut for the Falcons.
