Men's Lacrosse Weekly Preview: Wheelock

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team opened the 2016 season with a 16-6 setback at Mass Maritime at Clean Harbors Stadium last week. Junior Justin Bennet notched a hat trick and an assist to finish with four points in the loss for Albertus Magnus, which also received goals from junior Greg Buck and sophomore Paul Mirmina. Sophomore goalkeeper Jack Kerner made 17 stops in 53-plus minutes of action for the Falcons, who also received three saves from freshman John Brunetti.  Massachusetts Maritime took control of the contest by scoring three times in the first 4:04 after halftime to turn a two-goal lead in a five-goal advantage.

This Week: The Falcons open their home slate with a non-conference showdown versus Wheelock this Saturday.

Series History: Saturday's contest will be the first-ever between the two squads. Wheelock is in their second season as a varsity program and Albertus Magnus is in its third.

Scouting Wheelock: The Wildcats open the week coming off their first win in program history, a 6-3 triumph at Anna Maria. Before traveling to the Elm City, Wheelock will play both Curry College and Thomas College early in the week. Against the AMCATS, a three-goal second quarter proved to be the difference for Wheelock. The squad is averaging three goals per game and has won 15-of-31 face-offs this spring. Offensively, Eddie Romero leads the Wildcats with a team-high three points and five other Wheelock players have found the back of the net this season. Between the pipes, Noah Horning has amassed a .543 save percentage and made 25 saves this year. Horning has played every minute in the cage and currently has a 10.25 goals-against average.  

Albertus Notes
- Bennet scored three goals and added an assist in a season-opening setback for the Falcons last week. In the face-off circle, he won 15-of-25 and scooped a game-high 11 ground balls. On the defensive side of the ball, he added a caused turnover. His second goal of the contest made it a one-score game in the second quarter and he later closed the scoring for the guests to complete his hat trick midway through the fourth quarter.
- In the cage, sophomore goalkeeper Jack Kerner made 17 saves in 53 minutes of action, while freshman John Brunetti turned aside three shots in relief. Kerner has a .548 save percentage.
- The Falcons committed 28 turnovers against Mass. Maritime last weekend. The team also produced 15 shots on goal led by Bennet with five, while both Earl and Buck had three apiece.
