May Nets Seven Goals, Falcons Defeat Wheelock in Non-Conference Play

New Haven, Conn. – Sophomore James May (Branford, Conn.) led the offensive unit with seven goals and two assists for nine points as the Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team cruised past Wheelock College 19-7 in a non-conference clash on Sunday morning at Celentano Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Falcons dominated in the first period scoring five unanswered goals to take a 5-0 lead heading into the second. Justin Bennet (Berlin, Conn.) recorded two of the Falcons' five goals, including a man-up goal at the 2:44 mark.

Two minutes into the second, Wheelock netted its first goal of the game after Jared Trainor found the back of the net, cutting the score to within four, 5-1. About nine seconds later, Jack Kerner (Merrick, N.Y.) found May for his second goal of the game as well as sparked a 4-0 run to give the Falcons a eight-point cushion, 9-1.

With 2:25 left until the half, Luke McKinnen managed to put one past the goalkeeper and cut the lead to seven, 9-2. However, Brennan Moore (Meriden, Conn.) would close out the half with the final goal, extending the Falcons' lead to eight, 10-2.

It was a different third quarter as Wheelock threatened Albertus with four goals, but the hosts managed to score five more, pushing its lead to nine, 15-6, heading into the final 15 minutes. Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) scored two goals for the Falcons in the third while Kerner netted his first goal of the season at the 10:05 mark. For the Wildcats, Luke McKinnon scored all four goals, including a man-up goal at the 1:43 mark.

Wheelock could only play catch-up in the final period as the Falcons outshot the visitors' 4-1 to secure the non-conference home victory.

A LOOK INSIDE THE STATS

  • Falcons goalkeeper John Brunetti (West Haven, Conn.) notched eight saves to improve to 1-0 on the season, and picked up his second career victory.
  • Albertus Magnus finished the game 20-of-30 in face off wins and 24-of-27 in clears.
  • Wheelock was led by Luke McKinnon who scored five of the Wildcats' seven goals and also tallied an assist.
  • The Wildcats' goalkeeper John DiMassa registered 23 on 42 shots in the loss.
  • Justin Bennet (Fairfield, Conn.) recorded a team-high 16 ground balls while Austin Kozak (West Haven, Conn.) and Greg Buck (Berlin, Conn.) picked-up 10 apiece.
