Men's Lacrosse Cruises Past Mitchell, 26-1

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus men's lacrosse team notched its fourth straight win as the Falcons defeated Mitchell College, 26-1, in a non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon at Celentano Field. 

Senior Jon Olson (Bellmore, N.Y.) scored a career-best 11 goals for the Falcons from 13 shots on goal in addition to seven assists and one ground ball. Olson's 18-point performance broke the men's lacrosse program record in goals in a single season.

Freshman Matthew Hutchings (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) notched six goals and four assists in the win, while Rocco Albanese (Nutley, N.J) and Kader Price (Walden, N.Y.) each recorded two goals.

Freshman keeper Wally Carroll (Longbeach, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate win between the pipes for the blue-and-white. Carroll faced 10 shots with nine saves to limit Mitchell to one goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus scored right out of the gate less than 30 seconds into the game when Olson notched his first goal of the game off an assist by Derek Ralston (Guilford, Conn.).
  • From there, the Falcons went on to score seven unanswered goals to take a commanding 8-0 lead over the Mariners at the end of one.
  • The first quarter was also highlighted by Olsen, who recorded a hat trick within the first 12 minutes of the game. 
  • Mitchell was unable to stop the Falcons from attacking their keeper as the hosts scored an additional eight goals in the second quarter to boost the score to 16-0 at halftime. 
  • Olson recorded another three-goal stanza to bring his total goals up to six, while Hutchings recorded four goals in the first half.
  • The Falcons continued their relentless scoring with five additional goals in the third quarter. 
  • The duo of Hutchings and Olson finished the third with a combined four-goal performance. 
  • Trailing 22-0, the Mariners finally notched a point in the game's final quarter at the 11:52 mark behind a goal from Weston Schumacher.
  • The Falcons closed out regulation by scoring four more goals, including two from Olson and one from Sean Keenan (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Jack Ferrio (Fairfield, Conn.).

  • Today's game marked the 10th meeting between the Falcons and Mariners.
  • After today's win, Albertus evened the all-time series record to 5-5.

  • Carroll picked up his first start and win for the Falcons. 
  • DaKari Coleman (Norwalk, Conn.) went 20-for-23 in faceoffs which was a career-high for the freshman.
