Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up at Rivier, 16-13

NASHUA, N.H. -  Despite six goals from Matthew Hutchings (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) and two goals apiece from Jon Olson (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Zaheim Wilkings (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), the Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team saw its six-game win streak come to an end as the Falcons fell on the road, 16-13, to the Raiders of Rivier University on Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Falcons controlled the opening quarter as a hat trick from Hutchings and an unassisted goal from Wilkins gave the visitors a one-goal advantage, 4-3, heading into the next 15 minutes of play.
  • Rivier kicked off the second quarter tying the game at 4-4, but back-to-back goals from Rocco Albanese (Nutley, N.J.) and Hutchings pushed the visitors ahead by two, 6-4. 
  • The Raiders trimmed the deficit to within one, 6-5, until an unassisted goal from Olson ignited a three-goal scoring run to put the Falcons ahead by four, 9-5, with 8:01 left in the second. 
  • However, Rivier found its offensive rhythm, scoring three unanswered goals to make it a one-goal game, 9-8, at the half.
  • The first 12 minutes of the third quarter saw Albertus and Rivier force four ties (9-9, 10-10, 11-11, 12-12) until a goal from Michael Ference gave the hosts a one-goal lead, 13-12, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
  • Rivier proved to be the dominant team outscoring the Falcons 3-1 in the fourth and final quarter to secure the home victory.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Rivier is now 8-0 all-time against the Falcons.
  • Hutchings recorded his sixth hat trick of the season.
  • Along with his two goals, Wilkins tallied a team-high two assists. 
  • Wilkins posted four points in back-to-back games.
  • Olson tallied four points (2g, 2a) to give him 37 on the season. 
  • Walsh finished the afternoon with 13 saves, his fifth double-digit save performance of the year. 

 

UP NEXT
The men's lacrosse team is back in action on Tuesday, March 28, with a home conference tilt against Johnson & Wales University. Game time is set for 7pm at Celentano Field.
