Men's Lacrosse Comes Up Short to Norwich, 17-10

NORTHFIELD, VT. - Despite a hat trick from Matthew Hutchings (Mt. Kisco, N.Y.) and a pair of goals from Jon Olson (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Bailey Kirwin (Barrie, Ontario), the Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team came up short on the road, 17-10, to the Cadets of Norwich University Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • The first minute of regulation saw Norwich jump out to an early 2-0 lead following back-to-back goals from Thomas Muraski and Matt Meehan before an unassisted goal from Hutchings at the 9:56 mark cut the lead in half, 2-1.
  • Despite five shots, including two shots on goal, Albertus was held scoreless, while the Cadets extended their lead to eight, 9-1, after closing out the quarter with seven straight goals.
  • Norwich headed into the halftime break with an 11-goal cushion, 14-3, after outscoring Albertus 5-2 in the second quarter. 
  • Two of the Falcons' second-quarter goals came just 1:20 apart from Hutchings and Cooper Strecker (Chester, Conn.).
  • Olson earned the assist on Strecker's goal at 5:36.
  • Albertus continued to fight as the Falcons outshot the Cadets in the third quarter, 10-9, but remained trailing by 11, 17-6, heading into the final 15 minutes of regulation.
  • Hutchings completed his eighth hat trick of the season behind an unassisted goal at the 8:17 mark while being sandwiched between a pair of goals from Kirwin and Olson. 
  • Olson also earned his second assist of the day on Kirwin's tally at 8:25.
  • Albertus rallied in the fourth quarter scoring four goals on 12 shot attempts, but the offensive threat was cut short as the Falcons fell by a final score of 17-10. 
  • The Falcons' fourth-quarter rally was led by four different scorers, including Zaheim Wilkins (Mastic Beach, N.Y.), Kader Price (Walden, N.Y.), Kirwin, and Olson.

  • Hutchings recorded his eighth hat trick of the season.

  • Albertus caused nine of the Cadets' 22 turnovers. 
  • Olson has recorded back-to-back games with two or more assists.
  • Kirwin has tallied four games with two or more goals. 

UP NEXT
The men's lacrosse team is back in action at home on Tuesday, April 18, with a GNAC tilt against the Saints of Emmanuel College. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. start.
