Olson Lifts Men's Lacrosse to Victory over Regis (Mass.) on Senior Day

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Trailing by four at the halftime break, the Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team rallied in the second half outscoring the Pride of Regis (Mass.) College, 7-2, to earn the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home victory by a final score of 10-9 Saturday afternoon on Senior Day. 

Prior to the opening face-off, the Albertus Magnus College men's lacrosse team honored and recognized the accomplishments of its five-member senior class - Jon Olson (Bellmore, N.Y.), Charles Stewart (Stratford, Conn.), Jack Ferrio (Fairfield, Conn.), Will Capalbo (Fairfield, Conn.), and Zaheim Wilkins (Mastic Beach, N.Y.). 

In addition, the Albertus men's lacrosse team recognized the accomplishments of Derek Ralston (Guilford, Conn.), Dane Walsh (Bethany, Conn.), Tyler Landseidel (Stamford, Conn.), Owen Allan (Ancaster, Ontario), and Luke James (Moon Township, PA).   

Olson led the offensive attack for the Falcons as the senior finished with a team-high five goals, while Bailey Kirwin (Barrie, Ontario) tallied four goals. Cooper Strecker rounded out the scoring as the freshman scored one goal in the fourth quarter. Kader Price (Walden, N.Y.) also recorded a great game for the Falcons tallying a season-high three assists.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Albertus' first goal came at the 4:03 mark, with Olson scoring his first of five goals and becoming the all-time points leader in a single season for the program. 
  • The original all-time, single-season points leader was set by former Falcon and current assistant coach Michael Choiniere in 2015 with 75 behind 52 goals and 23 assists. 
  • The Pride continued to find the back of the net against Falcon keeper Dane Walsh (Bethany, Conn.) over the next 15 minutes of play and headed into the halftime break with a four-goal advantage, 7-3.
  • The Falcons' two goals in the second quarter came from Olson at 11:50 and 3:10.
  • Out of the halftime break, the game's momentum began to shift in favor of the Falcons, with the hosts scoring four goals in the third quarter behind three tallies from Kirwin and one from Olson.
  • Two of Kirwin's goals were both assisted by Price.
  • Albertus also held the Pride to just two goals in the third and trimmed the deficit to within two, 9-7, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
  • With less than 10 minutes left in regulation, Albertus' offense went to work and scored the necessary goals needed to secure the comeback victory, 10-9.
  • Strecker ignited the rally at the 6:11 mark scoring his sixth goal of the season.
  • Kirwin was the next Falcon to find the back of the net with 3:20 left to play.
  • With less than 20 seconds left in regulation, Olson lifted the Falcons to victory with his fifth and final goal.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Today's game marked the fifth meeting in the all-time series between the Falcons and Pride.
  • After today's win, Albertus now holds a 3-2 record in the all-time series. 
  • Olson broke the single-season point record for the Falcons, finishing the game with five goals, including the game-winner.  
  • Kirwin matched his career-high in goals with four. 
  • Price set a new season-high in assists. 
  • Ralston went 11-for-13 in the face-off circle, which was his best of the season. 
  • Albertus won 17 face-offs, while Regis only won six.  
  • The Falcons outshot the Pride, 37-27.

The Falcons return to the field on Tuesday, April 25th, with an away GNAC game against the Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.). Game time is set for 6:00 p.m.
