NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team defeated Colby-Sawyer College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) home bout on Saturday afternoon, emerging from the match with a 2-0 victory in hand.

Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) and EJ Gonzalez (Cheshire, Conn.) paced the Falcons on offense, as they both scored goals for the blue-and-white. Johan Stagnaro (East Hartford, Conn.) picked up the lone assist in the match, while Cortez and Yahya Kardad (Wallingford, Conn.) led the Falcon's offensive attack with four shots apiece.

Garfield Robinson (West Haven, Conn.) started in goal for the Falcons and had an uneventful day, as the Chargers' offensive unit was unable to fire off a shot on goal. Robinson picked up his first shutout of the 2022 season.

Prior to the start of today's match, the Albertus men's soccer program honored its three-member senior class - Anthony Barreira (Trumbull, Conn.), Robinson, and Declan Ryan (Hamden, Conn.) - for their hard work and dedication to the program and in the classroom.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons raced out to an early offensive advantage over the Chargers, firing off four shots and a corner kick in the opening 10 minutes. Kardad, Stagnaro, Barreira, and Eduardo Chavez (Norwalk, Conn.) each ripped off a shot for the blue-and-white.
  • The Falcons continued to pelt the Chargers' keeper with shots over the next 10 minutes but were unable to sneak one in for the score.
  • The Falcons fired off three shots and a corner kick in the final eight minutes of the half but were unable to hang the go-ahead tally on the board, and the teams transitioned into the halftime break, still tied at zero.
  • Albertus came out firing to start the second half, as the blue-and-white unloaded two shots in the first six minutes of the second stanza.
  • The Falcons retained possession of the ball until the 59th minute when Cortez unleashed a thunderous shot from the corner that sailed past the outstretched arms of Chargers' keeper Yener Bartolon to give the blue-and-white the 1-0 advantage.
  • AMC didn't let up, regaining possession quickly, before Stagnaro took off up the field with the ball, finding Gonzalez waiting in the wings. Gonzalez wasted no time, burying the pass from Stagnaro into the corner of the net to double the Falcon's lead, 2-0.
  • Albertus continued to press its advantage as Aiden Coelho (Waterbury, Conn.) and Gabriel Paglia (Amity, Conn.) fired off a pair of shots that were denied by Bartolon.
  • The Falcons managed the clock well for the remainder of the match, denying the Chargers the opportunity for a comeback and taking home the 2-0 conference victory.
