Men's Soccer Storms Past Elms College with 4-0 Victory

CHICOPEE, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team recorded their second straight shutout with a 4-0 road victory over the Blazers of Elms College on Wednesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action. 

Eduardo Chavez (Norwalk, Conn.), Ben Pierce (Meriden, Conn.), Aiden Coelho (Waterbury, Conn.), and Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) all scored for the blue-and-white, while David Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) picked up his sixth shutout victory of the season in net with a two-save performance.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons came out of the gate hot to start the match, firing off three shots and two corner kicks over the first 17 minutes of regulation, with Johan Stagnaro (East Hartford, Conn.) contributing two of the three shots.  
  • Over the next eight minutes, the Falcons continued to drive their offense, unleashing three corner kicks and an additional two shots from Yahya Kardad (Wallingford, Conn.) and Stagnaro but were unable to put one through the posts against Blazers' keeper Colin Liedke. 
  • The teams traded shots for the next seven minutes before Cortez found daylight between the Blazers' defenders and sped through the opening, sending a rocket past Liedke for the first score of the match at the 34-minute mark. 
  • The Falcons' offense continued to move as the blue-and-white fired off an additional six shots and three corners over the final 11 minutes of the first half to secure the 1-0 advantage heading into the halftime break.  
  • Out of the break, AMC continued to exploit the Blazers' defense, as Roger Baldwin (New Haven, Conn.), Chavez, and Stagnaro each registered a shot over the first five minutes of the second stanza. 
  • The blue-and-white continued their offensive assault before Chavez found an opening and launched a shot past the Blazer's Ethan Sgarlata to give the Falcons the 2-0 lead with 28 minutes remaining in regulation. 
  • Albertus' kept up the pressure, firing off eight more shots over the next 15 minutes before Pierce took a pass from Cortez and deposited it into the back corner of the net to expand the visitor's lead to 3-0 with just under 14 minutes remaining in the match.  
  • The Falcons expanded their lead to 4-0 in the 85th minute, as Coelho took a pass from Baldwin and shot it into the net for the score. 
  • The Blazers were unable to respond in the final five minutes of the match, and the Falcons walked away with a 4-0 conference triumph.

  • The Falcons outshot the Blazers by a spectacular 29-6 margin. 
  • AMC totaled 11 corner kicks to Elms' two. 
  • The blue-and-white were called for 14 fouls, while the Blazers were whistled for 10. 
  • Elms tallied 10 saves to Albertus' two.   

NOTEWORTHY

  • The Falcons now sit in third place in the conference with a 6-1-2 conference mark and are just behind Norwich University and Saint Joseph's College of Maine for the top slot in the conference standings. 
  • Lucero recorded his sixth shutout of the season and leads the conference with six shutout victories. 
  • Cortez has now scored in back-to-back matches and is tied for fourth in the conference with seven goals scored and 16 points.  
  • Chavez and Coelho scored their first career goals in the contest. 
  • Stagnaro set a season-high with six shots.

The men's soccer team is back in action on Saturday, October 8th, as the Falcons travel to Standish, Maine, to take on the Monks of Saint Joseph College of Maine. Kick-off is set for 1:30 PM.
