Men's Soccer Closes Out Regular Season with Road Loss to Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT. -  The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team closed out the 2022 regular season with a 5-0 road setback against the Cadets of Norwich University in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday evening under the lights at Sabine Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Norwich controlled the opening 45 minutes of play as the Cadets held the advantage in both shots, 12-0, and corners kicks, 4-1.
  • Trailing the Cadets 2-0, Albertus was awarded a corner kick in the 26th minute and the opportunity to cut the deficit in half, but Kelvin Cortez's (Meriden, Conn.) placed ball was headed away by a Cadet defender. 
  • Shortly after, Albertus saw the deficit grow to four, 4-0, as back-to-back penalty kicks from Joseph Thongsythavong increased the Cadets' lead. 
  • The Cadets' final goal of the stanza came in the 37th minute, and the blue-and-white trailed at halftime, 5-0.
  • Despite being outshot by the Cadet, 8-2, in the second frame, Albertus' backline held its composure and kept the red-and-gold scoreless for the remainder of the game. 
  • Albertus' Liam O'Brien (Guilford, Conn.) and Roger Baldwin (New Haven, Conn.) each tallied a shot attempt in the final 10 minutes of play.

  • Norwich outshot Albertus, 20-2.
  • The Cadets won the battle in corner kicks, 11-1.
  • Albertus recorded eight fouls, while Norwich collected 10.
  • Thongsythavong finished the game with a team-leading four goals and an assist for the Cadets.

NOTEWORTHY

  • This is the 29th all-time meeting between the two programs.
  • Diosa recorded his first start in goal for the blue-and-white.
  • Diosa finished the game with three saves.
  • Tomas also made an appearance in goal for the Falcons.
  • Tomas posted six saves between the pipes.
  • O'Brien and Baldwin finished with a combined two shots.  

UP NEXT
The Falcons will now await their postseason fate when the GNAC Men's Soccer Tournament bracket is released later this week following the conclusion of conference play on Wednesday, Oct. 26.
