Men's Soccer Battles With Springfield To Scoreless Draw In 2023 Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team opened up its 2023 campaign with a 0-0 scoreless draw on Friday evening against Springfield College.

Andres Diosa (Cheshire, Conn.) stopped all five shots he faced in his season debut, recording his first clean sheet of his career in the process

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons were held without a shot on goal in the first half as Springfield controlled possession for the better part of the first 45 minutes. Diosa made three of his saves in the first half.
  • Albertus wasted no time in the second half getting shots on net, including three in the first five minutes by Walter Fontes (Hamden, Conn.), Donaldo Yanez (West Haven, Conn.) and Kris Bocchio (Middletown, Conn.). On Bocchio's shot, Springfield goalkeeper Noah Pote made a diving stop.
  • Yanez almost put one in for the Falcons in the 58th minute as his shot went off the crossbar before it was cleared by Springfield's Tristan Moran

  • Springfield outshot Albertus, 13-9 overall.
  • The Pride had 11 fouls in the game, including seven in the second half. The Falcons had just 6.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Each team received a yellow card as Kelvin Cortez of Albertus received one in the 72nd minute and Maitoe Suppasuesangu received one for the Pride in the 83rd minute.
  • It was Diosa's second start of his career, after starting one game in 2022.
  • The meeting was the first between the two programs.
