Men's Soccer Stays Perfect in GNAC Off Stone's Game-Winning Goal versus Colby-Sawyer

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — With the score stuck at zero apiece through 80 minutes of play, Morgan Stone (Wallingford, Conn.) etched his first goal of the season to snap the stalemate as the Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team remains unbeaten in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference following a 1-0 triumph over the visiting Colby-Sawyer College Chargers at Celentano Field on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first 10 minutes of regulation, Colby-Sawyer was a force to be reckoned with on the pitch with a trio of shots and four corner kicks. Kaden Lewis was the first Charger to tempt the Falcon defenders at the seven-minute mark, but EJ Gonzalez (Cheshire, Conn.) fortified the net and blocked the close attempt to keep the visitors off the board. Following three consecutive corner kicks by the Chargers, Colby-Sawyer's Judson DiMaria mustered an attempt on target, but Gabriel Paglia (Amity, Conn.) darted across the goalkeeper's box to send the ball packing in the opposite direction. For the fourth CSC corner kick attempt, the visitors' Josh Warner beelined for the net for another shot on goal before Johan Stagnaro (East Hartford, Conn.) headed the ball out of danger for the Falcons.
  • After coming off the bench, Lorenzo Lauria (New Haven, Conn.) battled at midfield for possession of the ball successfully, followed by a promising attempt to score near the top left of the box, but Warner used his body as a shield to deny the shot.
  • Off an Albertus Magnus foul, Colin Riley-Perec beat the one-on-one matchup against the Falcons' defender, but Colby Nardelli (Berlin, Conn.) came to his teammate's aid to block the shot from breaching the net.
  • The Chargers attempted another corner kick, as the cross was headed out by Roger Baldwin (New Haven, Conn.) followed by a quick and close shot by Riley-Perec, thankfully, Nardelli was there to make a defensive save for the hosts.
  • As the GNAC foes entered the second half knotted at zero, they traded shots with little success despite the Falcons' two close calls. Off a yellow card by Colby-Sawyer, Baldwin delivered a beautiful shot on track to meet the nylon before Nick Carrabino sent it out of bounds. A Chargers' foul drew a free-kick attempt at 73:50 by Stagnaro with a misdirection leap over the ball by Lauria nearly disjointed the visitors' defense, but the ball barely kissed the right side of the outer net, a few inches from scoring.
  • Anthony Barreira (Trumbull, Conn.) brought in the ball from the left corner a few feet from the goalie's box to allow Stone to tap the ball in past the goalkeeper Yener Bartolon in the 80th minute for the eventual game-winning goal.
