Men's Soccer Leads GNAC With Six All-Conference Players

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Six members of the Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team were named to the All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Team on Wednesday.

The Falcons led the GNAC with the most members on the All-Conference team. Lorenzo Lauria (New Haven, Conn.) and Gabriel Paglia (Amity, Conn.) were named to the first team. Johan Stagnaro (East Hartford, Conn.), EJ Gonzalez (Cheshire, Conn.), and David Lucero (East Haven, Conn.) were named to the second team and Roger Baldwin (New Haven, Conn.) was named to the third team. 

Freshman Matheus Pimenta (Branford, Conn.) was named to the All-Sportsmanship team.

Lauria, in his first year at Albertus finished tied for fourth in goals with 10 and was sixth in the GNAC with 22 points. 

Lauria was credited with three game-winning goals on the season, including a hat trick against Lasell in a 3-1 win on October 26. Lauria also scored a goal in the team's 2-1 overtime win over Rivier in the GNAC quarterfinals game. 

In a 1-0 regular season win over Rivier on September 14, Lauria scored a dramatic game-winning goal in the 89th minute to lift the Falcons to victory. In the team's first game of the season against Springfield in a 1-1 tie on August 30, Lauria scored just a goal just 23 seconds into the season.

Paglia made his first appearance on the All-GNAC team as a defender and scored two goals with two assists in 18 games. Paglia anchored a backline that led to eight shutouts for the Falcons this season. Albertus allowed just 10 goals in 15 GNAC games during the season which was tied for best in the conference. 

Paglia scored a goal in a 4-0 win over New England College on September 7 and had a goal in a 5-1 win over Regis. He also assisted on a goal in the GNAC quarterfinals win over Rivier and was named to the GNAC All-Tournament team.

Stagnaro was tied for third in the GNAC with six assists on the season. He also had three goals and 12 points. 

During the team's quarterfinals win over Rivier, Stagnaro delivered the assist on the corner kick that led to the game-winning header by Morgan Stone in the 100th minute.

In a 4-0 win over Elms on September 28, Stagnaro had three assists, all on corner kicks. In a 5-1 win over Regis on Family and Homecoming Weekend, Stagnaro notched a goal and two assists. 

Gonzalez is another member of the vaunted backline for the Falcons. He finished the season with two goals, which matched his career-high from two seasons ago.

Gonzalez scored a goal in the team's 4-0 win over New England College on September 7th and notched a goal in a 3-3 tie against Emmanuel on September 25. 

It's the second time in his career Gonzalez has made the All-GNAC second team. He was also named to the team in 2022. He was named to the GNAC All-Rookie team in 2021.

Lucero finds himself on the All-GNAC second team for the second straight season after finishing the season 9-4-4 in net. He had five shutouts on the season and combined for two more while averaging a 1.19 goals-against average.

Lucero had shutout wins against Rivier, Anna Maria, Norwich, Elms and Dean. He had combined shutouts against NEC and Mitchell.

Lucero twice had a season-high seven saves in a 1-0 win over Anna Maria and a 1-1 tie against Johnson and Wales. He also had six saves three separate times.

Lucero, who was named the 2022 GNAC Rookie of the Year and named to the GNAC All-Rookie team, is fifth all-time in Albertus history with 194 saves and second all-time in shutouts with 16.

Baldwin makes his first appearance on the All-GNAC team, as he had nine points on the season that included three goals and three assists.

He had two game-winning goals on the season, including the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Anna Maria in which he scored in the 56th minute.  Against Norwich, he scored in the 55th minute in a 1-0 win on October 12.

Pimenta, who is making his first appearance on the GNAC All-Sportsmanship team, had two goals this season, coming against Elms and Mitchell.

The six members of the All-GNAC team were the most in program history since the 2012 season.
