Walker’s Double-Double Not Enough in 68-61 Loss to USJ

Despite 22 points and 19 rebounds from Kendrea Walker (New Haven, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus women's basketball team fell to the University of Saint Joseph 68-61 on Wednesday night in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action.

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 15-4 on the year and 5-3 in GNAC play, while Saint Joseph improves to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in league action.

The Falcons shot 36.5% from the field in the contest and struggled from behind the arc, hitting just 3-of-21, for a 14.3% showing. Saint Joseph shot 41.1% from the field, including a 7-of-18 showing from three-point land. The Blue Jays were led by Mary Hyde, who finished with 20 points on 50% shooting.

The Blue Jays opened the contest with a 12-4 run before jumping out to a 25-10 advantage. Albertus used a 20-3 run capped by an Olivia Sutherland (Wallingford, Conn.) three pointer to cut the Saint Joseph lead to two at 30-28.

Saint Joseph went into the break with a 37-30 lead thanks to a 6-of-12 showing from behind the arc in the opening frame. The Falcons held a 24-20 rebounding advantage in the half as well, led by nine rebounds from Walker.

The Falcons put together another run to cut the Blue Jays' lead to three at 43-40 five minutes into the second half as Taylor Jagoe (Milford, Conn.) connected on a layup for her lone bucket of the night.  Saint Joseph extended its lead back up to 10 and went on to take the eventual seven-point GNAC victory.

Nicole Acerra (East Haven, Conn.) was one of three Falcons in double-figures, joining Walker, as she scored 10 points, while adding five assists. Annie Sutila (Bridgeport, Conn.) tallied 10 points and six rebounds as she shot 2-of-15 from behind the arc, while Annie Raucci (Milford, Conn.) added nine rebounds and eight points. Sutherland chipped in with nine points.

Albertus will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 when the Falcons travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier University in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
