WINTHROP, Mass. – For the second time this season, the duo of Shyla Osmond (New Haven, Conn.) and Kyah Nowlin (Stamford, Conn.) swept the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly awards for the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team, as Osmond was named Player of the Week and Nowlin Rookie of the Week.
Osmond and Nowlin are no strangers to the conference's weekly honor roll, as they have combined for six GNAC weekly awards this season. Osmond has been named Player of the Week three times, trailing her teammate Rah-Rah Thompson (Bridgeport, Conn.) (4) for most in the league. Nowlin has garnered Rookie of the Week accolades three times, second-most in the conference.
Osmond was vital for the Falcons during a 2-0 week, filling up the stat sheet with 28.0 points, 9.0 assists, 5.5 rebounds and 7.5 steals per game. In a 77-54 triumph over Dean College on Thursday, the senior guard poured in 30 points, seven assists, four rebounds and six steals. She then posted her ninth double-double of the season with 26 points and 11 assists to lead Albertus to a 95-74 win over Rivier University on Saturday. Osmond also tallied a career-high nine steals against the Raiders, while committing just two turnovers in 39 minutes of play.
Nowlin had a breakout week for the Falcons, averaging 22.0 points, 3.0 assists and 5.5 steals per game, while shooting 42.1% (16-38 FG, 7-24 3PT, 5-7 FT). The freshman guard began her week with 14 points, three assists, two rebounds and five steals on the road against Dean. She then caught fire against Rivier on Saturday, scoring 23 points in the first half, on her way to a season-high 30. Nowlin joins Osmond as the only two Falcons to reach the 30-point plateau this season. In addition to her scoring success, Nowlin recorded three assists and a season-high six steals in 28 minutes against the Raiders.
After earning two wins this past week, the Falcons own a 5-2 record in the GNAC and a 15-6 mark overall. Albertus enters this week's play riding a three-game win streak and have won five out of its last six contests.
The Falcons will play their first home game of February on Wednesday, Feb. 12, as they will welcome Emmanuel College (Mass.) for a high-profile GNAC showdown at 6 p.m.
