Women's Basketball Keeps Offense Rolling, Defeats Elms on the Road, 79-57

CHICOPEE, Mass. -  Behind a career-high 37 points from junior guard Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) and a 20-point, 15-rebound double-double from Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.), the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team extended its winning streak to nine straight and improved to a perfect 11-0 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play following Thursday's 79-57 road victory over Elms College. 

Falcon guard Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) also had a great game as the sophomore guard put together a 12-point performance to go along with one rebound.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Elms controlled the opening two-and-a-half minutes of play as the Blazers kicked off regulation with the early 5-2 lead until back-to-back baskets from Murray-Leach gave the Falcons their first lead of the evening, 6-5. 
  • Albertus fed off the pair of baskets from Murray-Leach and went on a 7-0 run that was capped by a layup from Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) to extend the visitor's lead to 13-5 at the 3:05 mark.
  • A three-pointer from Elms' Brianna Metellus halted the Falcons' run and cut the lead to 13-8, but the visitors would head into the second stanza with a five-point advantage over the Blazers, 20-15. 
  • Elms came out of the huddle with the hot hand, out-shooting the Falcons by a 6-3 margin to cut the deficit to within two, 23-21, just 1:36 into the second quarter. 
  • Shortly after, the game's momentum shifted in favor of the Falcons as a deep trey from White ignited a 12-2 run that put the hosts ahead by 12, 35-23, with 4:11 remaining on the clock.
  • Albertus saw its double-digit lead dwindle to three, 35-32, at the 2:27 mark following a 9-0 Blazer run. 
  • The Falcons stormed back with their own 6-0 run over the final two minutes of the stanza to go up by nine, 41-32, at the half. The late run started with a basket from Murray-Leach that was quickly followed by a free throw from Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.) and a long trey from White. 
  • Elms and Albertus started the third by exchanging baskets, with the Falcons leading 47-38 with 5:31 remaining in the quarter. 
  • From there, the duo tandem of Scott and Murray-Leach put together a 15-3 run of their own to put the Falcons ahead 62-41 heading into the fourth and final quarter.
  • Albertus and Elms traded baskets over the course of the fourth quarter, with the Falcons eventually securing the 79-57 conference victory over the Blazers.

  • White has scored 10+ points in six straight games following tonight's contest.
