JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) scored 36 points and Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) hit a clutch three pointer with five seconds remaining as the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team defeated New Jersey City University (NJCU), 82-75 on Tuesday evening in a non-conference road contest. The win was the third straight for the Falcons.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter was filled with runs, beginning with a 10-0 run from the Falcons to take a 12-6 lead behind four points from Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) and three from Scott.
  • NJCU then followed up with nine straight of their own to take a 15-12 lead, capped by a three from Damaris Rodriguez with 2:47 left in the quarter.
  • Albertus held the Gothic Knights scoreless over the last 2:47 and finished the quarter on a 7-0 run, ending with a layup from Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.). The Falcons led 19-15 after the first ten minutes.
  • The second quarter was a slow start for the first 4:23 for the Falcons, scoring just two points. From there, the Falcons hit the final six shots of the quarter as Murray-Leach scored seven straight of her own, followed by ten straight from Scott. Scott and Murray-Leach combined for all 21 points in the second, as Scott had 14. Albertus held a slim 40-38 lead at the break.
  • The Gothic Knights kicked off the third with a 15-4 run to take a 53-44 lead at the 4:21 mark as Rodriguez and Tahirah Kelley both hit three for NJCU.
  • The Falcons got within three on a three from Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) with 3:12 remaining.
  • Albertus got within one point in the quarter at 57-56 after a three-point play from Scott, but on the next possession for NJCU, Elyssa Russo was fouled taking a three and made all three free throws to give the Gothic Knights a 60-56 lead.
  • In the fourth, the Falcons got to within two points four different times but could not overtake the lead. However, down 71-70, Rivera hit a three with 2:17 remaining to put Albertus up, 73-71.
  • Alisha Mumforf would score the next four points for NJCU, the last two coming with 1:16 remaining.
  • The two teams swapped turnovers in the final minute with the Falcons eventually getting the ball and calling a timeout with eight seconds remaining. After the timeout, White inbounded the ball to Zdru who flipped the ball back to White as she stepped into a three and gave the Falcons the 76-75 lead with five seconds left. NJCU turned the ball over on their final possession and Scott made her final six free throws to preserve the win after two technical fouls on NJCU.

NOTEWORTHY

  • The 36 points were the most for Scott since she scored 39 in a triple overtime win over the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) last season.

  • The eight three-pointers were a season-high for Albertus.
  • Albertus took the edge in second chance points, 12-10 after grabbing seven offensive rebounds.
