Rivera's Monster Double-Double And Big Third Quarter Propels Women's Basketball Win Over Conn. College

HARTFORD, Conn. - Natasha Rivera had a monster double-double with 14 points and 21 rebounds and Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) scored a team-high 26 points to lead the Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team over Connecticut College, 80-69 on Saturday afternoon on the campus of Trinity College in the Trinity Tip-Off consolation game. 

Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) scored 20 points to go with seven rebounds and the Falcons outscored the Camels by 21 points in the third quarter.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Camels jumped out to an early 5-0 lead until Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) hit a three to get the Falcons on the board.
  • Albertus took its first lead of the game on a three from Murray-Leach at the 2:29 mark of the first quarter.
  • Conn. College took the lead back on a three from Mia Xerras, but the Falcons would end the first ten minutes ahead 16-15 as Scott made three free throws after being fouled on a three-point attempt with 19 seconds left.
  • Murray-Leach opened the second quarter with a three to put the Falcons up 19-15. She was answered by Conn. College's Avery Burns to make it a one point game.
  • The teams swapped leads three more times until the Camels ran off 11 straight points to take their biggest lead of the game at 31-21 with 4:58 in the second.
  • After a timeout by Albertus, the Falcons answered in a big way, scoring the final 13 points in the last 3:17 and holding the Camels scoreless to take a 34-31 into halftime. Scott scored nine of the final 13 points in the second quarter.
  • Albertus pulled away in a big way in the third quarter as it caught fire from the field, shooting 13-for-17 (76.5 PCT) from the field. The Falcons took a 46-35 at the 6:21 mark after six straight points from Murray-Leach.
  • Conn. College's Hallie O'Toole made three free-throws to cut its deficit to eight with 6:15 remaining in the third. From there, the Falcons scored 14 straight points to take a 60-38 lead as Rivera led the Falcons with seven points during the decisive run.
  • Rivera gave the Falcons their biggest lead of the game at 69-44 with under a minute left after sinking two free-throws. Albertus led 71-47 heading to the final quarter.
  • Albertus held Conn. College without a made field goal for a 3:27 stretch as it took over the game.
  • The Camels fought back in the fourth, scoring 16 straight points to open the quarter and making it a 71-63 game with 3:32 remaining.
  • The Falcons didn't get on the board in the fourth until a three from White with 2:51 remaining. The Falcons were able to hold off the Camels in the final three minutes as White scored seven points in the fourth.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Scott was named to the Trinity Tip-Off All Tournament Team. Scott is averaging 24 points on the season, which is second in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC)
  • Rivera's 21 rebounds were a career-high, surpassing her previous high of 15 she set last year against Regis. It was also her sixth double-double of her career.
  • The Falcons' win over the Camels snapped a five-game losing streak against them.
  • There were three ties and seven lead changes on the day.
  • Albertus had 19 fastbreak points to ten for the Camels.
  • The Falcons scored 19 points off of the 18 turnovers for the Camels.
  • Scott and Murray-Leach both moved up their way up the all-time scoring chart for Albertus. Scott now has 1,073 points, tying her for 12th all-time in program history. Murray-Leach has 1,049 points, putting her 15th all-time.
