Late Rally Falls Just Short In Women's Basketball Loss To Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped in a 64-57 loss to Amherst in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.

Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) led the way with 18 points. Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.) scored 12 points and had ten rebounds for her second-straight double-double.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Amherst jumped to an early 5-2 lead before Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) tied the game up with a three at the 7:46 mark in the first.
  • The teams swapped lead seven times in the first quarter with the Falcons taking their biggest lead of 15-13 with 1:38 remaining after four straight points, including two from Diamond White and two free throws from Rivera.
  • A three-pointer at the buzzer from Annie McCarthy gave Amherst a slim 16-15 lead at the end of the first.
  • The Falcons took a brief 17-16 lead in the second after a layup from White ten seconds into the quarter, but seven straight points from Amherst, including a three from Reeya Patel put it up 23-17 just 51 seconds into the quarter.
  • Five straight points from Scott cut the Falcons' deficit to 23-22 with 7:36 left, but a 17-5 run over the next five minutes put Amherst in control at 40-27 as the Mammoths hit three three-pointers during the run.
  • Albertus held Amherst scoreless the final 2:30 of the half as it crept back to cut their deficit to 40-31 as White scored four straight points to end the half.
  • The Mammoths opened up the third taking a 44-31 lead, but the Falcons responded, scoring nine straight as Scott, Rivera and White all had field goals during the run.
  • Albertus was held without a field goal over the final 5:46 as the Mammoths scored the final five points in the last minute, capped by a three from Kori Barach to take a 55-4 lead going into the fourth.
  • Barach hit a three at the 7:07 mark of the fourth to give Amherst its biggest lead at 60-46. It was the last field goal Albertus would allow as the Falcons made a rally, going on an 11-1 run behind four points from Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.), and a three to end the run by Scott at the 1:45 mark.
  • The Falcons, however, would not get closer the rest of the way and Amherst went 3-for-4 in the final minute from the free-throw line.
