Women's Basketball Blows Out Baruch For Fourth Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team had six players score in double figures and won its fourth straight game, defeating Baruch College, 93-60 on Friday evening.

The winning streak is the longest this season for the Falcons.

Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.) had a double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds. Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) led the Falcons with 16 points. Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) scored 15 as did Sarah Evangelista (West Haven, Conn.).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams split the first eight points of the game in the first 1:31, but a three from Scott helped spark a 13-4 run to give Albertus a 17-8 lead at the 4:06 mark. 
  • Albertus held the Bearcats to just one field goal over the last 3:23 and took a 28-12 lead after the first ten minutes. Rivera scored eight points in the quarter while Scott and Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) each had seven.
  • Hannah Barrientos (East Hampton, Conn.) came off the bench in the second quarter and scored seven points while shooting 3-for-4 from the field, including a three. 
  • Albertus held Baruch to 33.3 percent shooting and 0-for-5 from three in the quarter. Albertus held Baruch scoreless from the 9:20 mark of the quarter until the 4:13 mark. During that time, the Falcons extended its lead to 36-14, eventually leading by as much as 44-20. Albertus took a 46-24 lead into the half.
  • Baruch trimmed the Albertus lead in the third quarter to 53-38, but three-pointers from White and Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) helped put the Falcons back up by 23 at 61-38.
  • Albertus ended the third leading 70-47 behind nine points from Murray-Leach. Albertus went 3-for-4 from three.
  • The Falcons continued to extend their lead in the final frame behind  three more threes from Evangelista who scored nine in the quarter. The defense held Baruch to 29.4 percent (5-for-17) shooting, while the Falcons shot 50 percent (8-for-16) from the field.

NOTEWORTHY

  • It was the first win for the Falcons in the three all-time meetings. The two teams last met in 1990.
  • The 33 points was the second-largest margin of victory for the Falcons this season. They beat Rosemont earlier in the season by 58 (100-42).
  • Led by Evangelista and Barrientos - who both scored career-highs, the Falcons scored 37 points off the bench, the most this season.
  • Rivera notched her third double-double of the season.
  • White and Scott have scored in double figures in every game this season.
  • The Falcons hit a season-high 11 three-pointers and shot a season-best 44 percent from three. 
  • Albertus tied a season-high with 21 assists. It is the third game this season with 21 assists.
