Women's Basketball Rallies From Early Deficit, Defeat Farmingdale State For Sixth Straight Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team won its sixth straight game, defeating Farmingdale State, 80-71 on Thursday evening in a non-conference game.

Three players scored at least 20 points on the evening as Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) scored 28 to go with nine assists. Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) scored 24 and Jakara Murray-Leach had another double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Murray-Leach shot 10-for-14 from the field.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Rams took control early in the first quarter, scoring the first six points of the game and taking a 10-2 lead less than four minutes left behind six points from Layla Mendoza and four from Taneece Wooden.
  • Albertus answered the opening run with one of their own, going on an 11-2 run as White scored five points and Murray-Leach, four and the Falcons took their first lead at 13-12 with 2:31 left.
  • The Falcons led one more time in the quarter, but the Rams scored the final five points, including a three from Victoria Kantzian to lead 19-15 after the first ten minutes.
  • Albertus scored the first four points of the second quarter to briefly tie the game until the Rams scored the next seven points to take a 26-20 lead with 6:52 remaining. The Falcons took the lead back at 27-26 on a jump shot from Murray-Leach.
  • The Rams took their final lead of the game, going up 32-29 with 2:07 left, but five straight points from Scott gave Albertus the slim 34-33 lead at the half. Scott finished with 12 points in the quarter.
  • The Falcons scored the first nine points of the third quarter and led 54-38 with just over three minutes remaining. Murray-Leach scored the first four points of the quarter, Scott scored eight and White, seven during the offensive blitz to start the second half.
  • Farmingdale State cut the Albertus lead to 56-49, allowing just one field goal in the final 3:13 of the third quarter.
  • There was a similar start to the fourth quarter as the Falcons went back up 67-53 just 3:54 minutes into the period as White and Murray-Leach led the charge early on. 
  • The Rams crept back to make it a 72-67 game as Gemma Phalski hit two threes during the run. Albertus wouldn't allow the Rams to get any closer, outsourcing the Rams, 8-4 over the final two minutes.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Both Scott and Murray-Leach jumped up the all-time scoring list as Scott moved up to 11th with 1,202 points. Murray-Leach is just behind at 12th all-time at 1,182 points. Scott needs nine more points to move into solo tenth.
  • There were three ties and seven lead changes. 
  • The Falcons took advantage of 22 turnovers from the Rams, scoring 29 points off of them. 
  • White's 24 points was a season-high.
  • It was the fifth double-double of the season for Murray-Leach.
  • Scott set a career-high with nine assists.
  • It was the fifth straight game the Falcons shot over 45% from the field. They have scored at least 80 points in all six games during their win streak.
  • Natasha Rivera (Ansonia, Conn.) finished with ten rebounds, her fourth game with double-digit rebounds.

 

UP NEXT

The Falcons won't get back into action until 2024 when they host Lasell in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) action on Saturday, January 6 at The Nest for a 1 p.m. tip.
