Late Free Throws By Saint Joseph's (Me.) Ends Women's Basketball's Eight Game Winning Streak

STANDISH, Me. - The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team had its eight-game winning streak snapped in a 68-65 loss to Saint Joseph (Me.) on Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt.

Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) led the Falcons with 19 points to go with five rebounds. Jakara-Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) had 17 points and 14 rebounds while Caitlyn Scott (White Plains, N.Y.) scored 16 to go with five rebounds and four assists.

In 65-65 game with two seconds left, the monks hit three free throws to get the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Falcons got out to a hot start scoring the first eight points, the final six coming from Murray-Leach to take an early 8-0 lead. 
  • Saint Joseph's got within four after a jump shot from Grace Ramsdell before Scott answered with a layup to make it 11-5 with 5:04 left. 
  • The Monks, however, held the Falcons to just two points the rest of the way in the period as they finished on a 13-2 run to take an 18-13 lead after the first quarter. Maddie Lebel scored five points during the stretch.
  • Albertus owned the second quarter, out-scoring the Monks, 25-7. Murray-Leach once again started the scoring for the Falcons in the quarter followed by seven straight from Scott. 
  • With the game tied 20-20 with 6:34 left in the half, Albertus scored 12 straight, taking a 32-20 lead with 1:51 left. 
  • Scott gave Albertus their biggest lead at 35-22 with 1:09 left. After Ramsdell made a layup and free throw to cut the Albertus lead to ten, White responded with a three to put the Falcons back up by 38-25, a lead they took into the half. Scott scored 12 points in the second quarter and the Falcons held the Monks to 3-for-15 shooting in the quarter.
  • Albertus had its lead trimmed to 45-37 after three points from Angelica Hurley, but Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) responded with a three to put the Falcons up by double-digits.
  • An 8-1 run from the Monks highlighted by a three from Elisabeth Stapelfeld cut the Falcons' lead to 49-45, but White answered with a three to go back up 52-45. Albertus headed into the fourth leading 52-47.
  • The Monks got to within three on a three-pointer from Hurley at the 5:54 mark of the fourth. Natasha Rivera put the Falcons back up by six after a layup in free throw. However, seven straight points, including a three from Ramsdell gave the Monks their first lead of the second half. 
  • The two team swapped buckets as a layup from White, a three from Hurley and a game-tying layup with 21 seconds by Scott tied the game at 65-65. 
  • On the final possession for the Monks, Hurley was fouled with two seconds left. She sank both free throws. She added one more after a technical foul to Albertus, giving the Monks the win.

  • It was the seventh double-double of the season for Murray-Leach.
  • White is averaging 20 points over her last four games.
  • There were four ties and five lead changes. 
  • Albertus led the battle in the paint, out-scoring the Monks, 36-30
