Women's Basketball Dominates Colby-Sawyer to Open GNAC Action

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Albertus Magnus College women's basketball team opened Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play at home with a 70-51 victory over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers on Saturday.

Caitlyn Scott (White Plans, N.Y.) posted 22 points, while Elizabeth Bruno (Providence, R.I.) made her first start this season and recorded a career-high 14 points. The Falcons took the lead after their first basketball in the first period, with their largest lead at 28 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams had a few opportunites to score, but neither could muster up any points until Catherine Chick connected for a free throw a little over a minute and a half into the opening quarter for Colby-Sawyer.
  • Thirty seconds later, Scott drove to the basket for a layup off the defensive board and assist by Jakara Murray-Leach (Norwalk, Conn.) for the only lead change. Scott scored six of the first eight points for Albertus to put the Falcons up 8-1.
  • Scott finished with 13 points in the quarter as the Falcons led 26-11 after the first 10 minutes. Albertus shot 10-for-17 (58.8%) from the field and held the Chargers to 4-for-17 (23.5%) from the field.
  • Scott tacked on four more points off consective trips to the line to put the hosts up, 30-11, at the 7:37 mark in the second period.
  • Albertus' newest addition to the team, Isabella Fiorillo (West Haven, Conn.), connected for her first points as a Falcon and increased the lead to 32-13.
  • The home team rounded out the first half with a 13-6 run ignited by a layup from Sharaya Keele (Adams, Mass.) off the pass from Bruno. After a Charger turnover, Albertus regained possession of the ball to cap off the scoring stretch with a layup by Diamond White (Hamden, Conn.) on an assist from Murray-Leach.
  • Albertus opened the second half with a 7-2 run kickstarted by a layup by Bruno off the quick pass from Amanda Zdru (Stratford, Conn.) 42 seconds into the third.
  • Makenna Grillone, Marissa Holt and Elyza Mitchell chipped away at the deficit for Colby-Sawyer off a 9-2 run, including seven straight points to make it 54-33 contest at 5:18.
  • The visitors continued their rally with a 6-3 stretch, with four points off free throws, but a jumper by White and a steal for a fastbreak layup by Hannah Barrientos (East Hampton, Conn.) in the final seconds of the third helped keep the Falcons lead at 64-39.
  • Colby-Sawyer outscored the Falcons in the fourth quarter with a 12-6 run, including six straight points. Willow Ludlow (Preston, Conn.) made two layups, while Brooklyn Gonzalez (Shelton, Conn.) closed out the final seven seconds of play with a pair of free throws.

White moved up the school's all-time scoring list to 13th all-time. She now has 1,186 points in her career.

The Falcons are now 12-1 all-time against Colby-Sawyer and have won the last eight meetings.
