New Haven, CT - The Albertus Magnus College Women's Soccer team dropped a 2-1 decision to visiting Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent Emmanuel College on Monday afternoon. The Falcons outshot their opponents 19-8 but missed a few key opportunities that ultimately cost them the match.
Emmanuel College scored first in the 12th minute of play on sophomore forward Meghan Zerba's (Cumberland, RI/Bishop Feehan) throughball finish to give Emmanuel the 1-0 lead. The Falcons were the victims of bad luck in the 23rd minute when senior forward Samantha Gigliotti (Wolcott, CT/Sacred Heart) blasted a shot off the crossbar over the Goalkeeper.
Emmanuel would find the back of the net once again in the 33rd minute on senior midfielder Amber DiNucci's (New Bedford, MA/Apponequet) goal that gave Emmanuel a 2-0 lead. Gigliotti would be denied by sophomore goalkeeper Jessica D'Ottavio (Pawling, NY/Pawling) when she blasted a shot at point blank range that was smothered for the save. Emmanuel would take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Albertus stormed into the second half with renewed focus as sophomore forward Danielle Figueroa (Bridgeport, CT/Notre Dame Fairfield) found the back of the net in the 52nd minute on a terrific pass from freshman midfielder Meghan Loughman (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) to make teh score 2-1 Emmanuel.
The Falcons continued to get scoring opportunitites late in the second half when Figueroa's shot hit the cross bar to deny Albertus a goal. The Falcons outshot their opponents 11-1 in the second half but could not finish. D'Ottavio was outstanding in goal making 10 saves for Emmanuel while senior goalkeeper Christina Oddo (East Haven, CT/East Haven) made five saves for Albertus.
The Falcons drop to 9-5, 6-3 GNAC while Emmanuel improves to 6-9, 4-5 GNAC on the season. Albertus Magnus hosts Trinity College on Thursday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
