Women's Soccer Team Lends a Helping Hand

On Wednesday October 13, the Albertus Magnus College Women's Soccer team visited Amity High School Region #5 for the Southern Connecticut Conference (SCC) Unified Soccer Tournament. Unified Sports provides an opportunity for students with special needs to participate in interscholastic athletics. The Unified Sports Program partners special needs students with non-disabled peers for team competitions.  Associate Head Women's Soccer Coach Jon Adams teaches at Amity High School.

Amity hosted Unified Teams from Daniel Hand High School (Madison, CT), Hamden High School (Hamden, CT), Cheshire High School (Cheshire, CT), Wilbur Cross High School (New Haven, CT), Lyman Hall (Wallingford, CT), West Haven High School (West Haven, CT) and Jonathan Law High School (Milford, CT).

A special thanks is extended to Amity's Transition Program Director Tricia Fitzgerald, coaches Lisa Kaplan, Betsi Moller, and Debbie Davis, and Amity Athletic Director Paul Mengold, for their hard work organizing this event. The Falcons were on hand to volunteer their time to help out with refereeing, score keeping and coaching at the event.

"We could never have expected how great and special this event was.  We were fortunate to give our women the opportunity to show them the game of soccer in the purest sense," stated Albertus Magnus College Head Women's Soccer Coach Nick Wajnowski.

"As important as it is for our teams to win games and compete for a championship, it is just as important for all of our programs to give back to our community. I am very proud of our women's soccer team and coaching staff for not only enjoying one of the best seasons in the history of the program, but for taking time during a day off in the middle of their season to do valuable community service work. Student-athletes in-season have precious little free time, and the fact that our women's soccer team devoted their time for such a good cause is an outstanding representation of the values of Albertus Magnus College and our Athletic Department," stated Albertus Magnus College Athletic Director Michael Spinner.
