Six Falcons Earn GNAC All-Conference Honors

Six members of the Albertus Magnus women's soccer team have earned 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Conference honors as announced by the league office on Monday.  Seniors Shannon Skidmore (Terryville, Conn.) and Shelley Mirmina (Milford, Conn.) were tagged as First Team members to lead the way.

Skidmore, who was also named the 2013 GNAC women's soccer Defensive Player of the Year, earns First Team honors for the first time in her career.  Skidmore, who helped lead the Falcons to an impressive regular-season run in 2013, scored two goals on the year for the Falcons for four points.  She registered 11 shots in the regular-season with four being on goal.

Mirmina led the Falcons in the regular-season with 10 assists and was third on the team with six goals.  She holds the single-season program record in assists with 10 and her 15 career assists puts her in a tie for first among the all-time Falcon assist leaders.  This season, she has registered 22 points on her six goals and 10 assists. She scored a hat-trick on Oct 2 against Mount Ida and was named the GNAC and ECAC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 7.  During the regular-season, she led the GNAC with 10 assists and was second in shots with 78.

Senior Amanda Roke (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Alexis Mack (Meriden, Conn.) were named to the GNAC All-Conference Second Team for their efforts this season.  Roke leads the Falcons with 27 points on 10 goals and seven assists. She is tied with Mirmina with 15 career assists, a program record.  She was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 4 and was named the GNAC Player of the Week on Sept. 10.

Freshman Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) and sophomore Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) also earned All-Conference honors as they were named to the Third Team.  Polvan registered 15 regular-season points on seven goals and one assist.  She tallied three game-winning goals on the year.  In a 6-1 win over Mount Ida, she recorded five points on two goals and one assist. She was named the GNAC Rookie of the Week in back-to-back weeks on Oct. 15 and Oct. 22.

Case holds the Falcons' single-season record with nine shutouts.  In just her second year with the program, she has nine shutouts, which is third-best on the program's all-time list.  With 128 saves, she is fifth all-time for the Falcons.  This season she registered a career-high 13 saves in a 1-0 win at Simmons College and was named the GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 23 and Oct. 15. She was named ECAC Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 15 as well.  During the regular-season, she led the conference with a .894 save percentage and a GAA of 0.72.

Skidmore, Mack and Case are a part of a Falcons' defense that allowed just 13 goals during the regular-season in over 1,600 minutes played.  The defense also held opponents to 0.67 goals per game and an average of 12 shots per game.

Mirmina is the only player among the above mentioned that has earned All-Conference honors in the past.  She was tagged as a Second Team member in 2012.

As a program, Albertus Magnus women's soccer has produced five First Team members, six Second Team members, and eight total Third Team members.  Including this year's Defensive Player of the Year honor for Skidmore, the program has also had the 2005 GNAC Rookie of the Year in Gia Paturzo and the 2011 GNAC Coach of the Year in head coach Nick Wajnowski '05.
