On a very windy, cold and rainy afternoon, the Albertus Magnus women's soccer team downed Suffolk University 5-2 on Wednesday thanks to two goals apiece from Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) and Acacia Nelson (Bridgeport, Conn.).

The victory improves the Falcons' overall record to 9-7-1 and its showing in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play to 6-3-1.  Suffolk falls to 4-8-3 on the year and 3-4-3 in league action with the loss.

Becky Slivinsky (Plainville, Conn.) got things started in the sixth minute of play as she drilled a shot from 18 yards out to beat the keeper and give Albertus a 1-0 lead. Nelson scored her first goal of the contest in the 23rd minute as she went one-on-one with a defender and slid her shot past the diving keeper.

Polvan netted the Falcons' third goal of the half, taking a pass from Kaitlyn Fedumenti (Stratford, Conn.). Suffolk's first goal of the game came in the 35th minute when Jessica Harmon finished on a cross in the box from Jennifer Martin.

At the halftime break, the Falcons' led 3-1 and held a 12-4 advantage in shots.

Polvan had a spectacular goal in the 61st minute of play when she drilled a shot from about 30 yards out after dribbled through defenders. It was her team-leading eighth goal of the year and 16th of her career.

Nelson matched Polvan with her second goal of the contest when she finished on an Angelina Piccirillo (Naugatuck, Conn.) ball into the box.  That score pushed the Falcons' lead out to 5-1.

Suffolk's Harmon scored her ninth goal of the season on a free kick in the final seconds of the contest.

Albertus' Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) made four saves while allowing two goals.  Suffolk's Melissa Brouillette picked up four saves for the Rams before leaving the game.  Hannah McNulty took over and played 12 minutes for the visiting team.

Albertus will conclude the regular season on Saturday with a 5:30 p.m. match-up against Rivier University. The contest will be the first home game for the Falcons under the lights and will also be the team's senior night as Becky Slivinsky and Taylor Jagoe will be honored before the game.
