Postseason Begins 

The Albertus Magnus women's soccer team earned the fifth seed in the upcoming Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer tournament that is scheduled to begin Saturday, Oct. 30th. The Falcons will take on the fourth-seeded Blue Jays of the University of Saint Joseph's (Conn.) in a rematch of the 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Quarterfinals that saw the Falcons knock off the Blue Jays in a thrilling 3-2 double-overtime match. Kick-off is set for 7 PM at the University of Saint Joseph's (Conn.) Athletic Complex in West Hartford, Conn. 

Postseason Notes    

  • This is the Falcons' 13th GNAC postseason appearance.
  • Albertus has an all-time postseason record of 4-9-3. 
  • This is the second time Albertus Magnus and USJ have faced off in the postseason, with the Falcons winning the first match-up by a score of 3-2. 

2021 Recap

  • The Falcons were picked to finish sixth in the GNAC Preseason Coaches Poll. 
  • Albertus had a competitive first month of the season, compiling a 4-4 record that saw them drop three one-goal matches, and three shut-out victories over Mitchell College, CCNY, and conference opponent Regis (Mass.) College. 
  • During September, the Falcons compiled a 2-3 GNAC mark, with victories over Regis (Mass.) and Rivier University, with the latter being a 7-2 trouncing that marked their highest offensive attack of the season.  
  • The start of October saw the Falcons squad take off and compile a blistering 7-1 record, with the only blemish being a 3-2 overtime loss to the Blue Jays.
  • During that 7-1 stretch, the Falcons out-scored opponents by a 21-9 margin and recorded three shut-outs over conference foes Norwich University, Simmons University, and Colby-Sawyer College.
  • Sophomore Michelle Mecca (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) tallied eight wins for the Falcons in net, picking up victories in her last four appearances of the regular season. 
  • The Falcons utilized a balanced offensive attack, with 10 different players recording multiple goals scored during the season. 
  • Albertus also had two different players record 20+ points and one record 10+ points.
  • Katherine Raposo (Warwick, R.I.) led the Falcons' attack, picking up 26 points (11 G, 4 A), while Haley Andrews (Prospect, Conn.) followed close behind with 23 points (9 G, 5 A). 
  • Junior Keegan Riccio (West Haven, Conn.) added extra firepower to the mix, accumulating 12 points on the strength of two goals and eight assists. 
  • In goal, Mecca and Nicole Pracon (Derby, Conn.) combined for four shutouts on the season.
  • Coach Nick Wajnowski recorded his 130th career victory in the 1-0 win over Norwich University on Oct. 22nd.

This Year vs. Saint Joseph's (Conn.)

  • This year, the Falcons are 0-1 against the Blue Jays following a 3-2 overtime loss on Oct. 12. 
  • Raposo scored both goals for the Falcons in the loss. 
  • Pracon tallied four saves in net. 
  • Andrews picked up an assist in the contest. 
  • Saint Joseph's held the edge in both shots and corner kicks.

  • Maxine Muscatello leads the Blue Jays with 21 points, behind eight goals and five assists. 
  • Jenna Zupp has been an offensive weapon for the Blue Jays, tallying 10 points behind four goals and two assists. 
  • Victoria Schaffner has been a force in net for the Blue Jays this season, posting 47 saves and an 0.75 goals-against average for an 11-3-1 record.  
  • The Blue Jays have 11 players who have tallied at least one goal, and six who have posted multiple goals.

Albertus Magnus Player Highlight 

  • Raposo finished the regular season fifth in the conference in points and tied fourth in goals scored, along with JWU's Jordan Restivo. 
  • Mecca's 88 saves put her in fourth place in the GNAC, and her .838 save percentage was second only to Saint Joseph's Maine's Adia Grogon's .884 mark. 
  • Keegan's eight assists currently put her second in the league.    
  • Andrews has recorded three game-winners this season, while Raposo has tallied two.  
  • Freshman Emmalee Ianniello (Hamden, Conn.) has posted two game-winners on the season, helping the Falcons to victories over Mitchell and Colby-Sawyer.  
  • Andrews has gone 3-for-3 in penalty kicks this season.
