NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A pair of strikes within six minutes by Ava Murphy (West Haven, Conn.) and Julia Tsakonas (West Haven, Conn.) helped clinch the first win this season for the Albertus Magnus College women's soccer team over the visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology at Celentano Field on Sunday.
Murphy connected for a tally for the first time as a Falcon, while classmate Julianne Yuris (Middletown, Conn.) collected her first assist.
THE BASICS
FINAL: Albertus Magnus 2 | Wentworth 1
RECORDS: Albertus Magnus 1-0-1 | Wentworth 0-2-0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After her initial shot was saved three minutes earlier, Madelyn Seder put the Leopards on the board at the 12:18 mark as a stretch pass from Bryce Bateman found her streaking down the left side of the field.
- After Albertus Magnus picked up two corner kicks in the first dash of play in the second half, a sliding effort by Murphy in a scrum out front off of a corner kick gave the Falcons the tying score at the 64:31 mark. Erina Ismaili (Middlebury, Conn.) drilled the ball from the corner straight to Yuris in front of the cage before the first-year connected with Murphy for the equalizer.
- An outlet pass right to the box by Tyler Stocking (Middletown, Comm.) found the foot of Tsakonas, who found the twine just over six minutes later, giving Albertus a 2-1 edge.
- Amy Stevens (Lincoln, R.I.) denied both of the Leopards' shots in the final ten minutes in an attempt to tie the contest. Stevens made four saves in the win, while Shyla Kulesza made five stops for Wentworth.
- The Falcons owned tight edges in shots (9-8) and corner kicks (3-2).
