Softball Weekly Preview: Johnson & Wales, Norwich & Suffolk

Last Week: The Albertus Magnus College softball team went 3-1 in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play last week, sweeping a doubleheader at home versus Lasell and splitting a doubleheader at Rivier on Sunday. During the week, sophomore pitcher Megan Ferraro racked up two wins and an impressive 0.64 ERA to pace Albertus Magnus in the circle. At the dish, sophomore Gillian Fortier hit an impressive .615 with nine runs scored and four stolen bases to lead the Falcons offensively.

This Week: The Falcons host Johnson & Wales in midweek action in a rematch of last year's GNAC Championship game before traveling to the Green Mount State to face Norwich in a pivotal conference doubleheader. Albertus Magnus closes out a busy of week of play with a league doubleheader at Suffolk on Sunday afternoon.

Last Year Versus JWU: The Wildcats took three of the five meetings between the two squads last season. Johnson & Wales defeated Albertus Magnus in back-to-back games in the GNAC Championship to earn the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. During the regular season, the two foes split a doubleheader in the Ocean State and the Falcons defeated the Wildcats, 9-0, in the opening round of the conference tournament.

Last Spring Against Norwich: The Falcons swept the Cadets in New Haven a year ago. AMC took the opener, 14-3, in five innings and held on for a 10-9 triumph in game two. In game one,  Fortier Alyssa Puccilli and Daysia Wehder all chipped in three RBIs apiece. In game two, Fortier had three hits and Brianna Whitfield added two hits and two RBIs.

Live Stats: Game One & Game Two 

Last Spring Against Suffolk: The Falcons split a regular season doubleheader with the Rams in New Haven. Suffolk took the opener, 6-4, and Albertus Magnus scored a 3-0 win in game two. Fortier had two RBIs in game one and Rachel Cataudella chipped in two RBIs and Samantha Maselli tossed a complete game shutout in the finale. The two teams met again in the ECAC Tournament with the Falcons rallying for a 2-1 win.

Albertus Notes:
- Ferraro went 2-0 in the circle for the Falcons last week. She picked up conference wins against Lasell and Rivier to improve to 8-1 on the year. In 11 innings of work, Ferraro amassed a 0.64 ERA and struck out three hitters. She opened the week by throwing five innings and allowing one earned run in a 9-1 mercy-rule win versus the Lasers. Ferraro ended the week by tossing six innings and surrendering just three unearned runs in an 8-6 win at Rivier. She is currently 8-1 on the year with a one save and a team-leading 1.38 ERA. In 56 innings of work, she has also struck out a team-high 20 hitters.
- As a team, the Falcons have a 2.12 ERA. Freshman Kristen Cunning is 4-1 with a 2.57 ERA in 30 innings, while Maselli has gone 2-0 in 21 and one third innings and amassed a 2.30 ERA.
- Offensively, the team is hitting .312 with 30 extra-base hits, 28 stolen bases and 99 runs scored.
- Fortier hit .615 with nine runs scored and four stolen bases to lead the Falcons to a 3-1 mark in conference play. Fortier recorded three multi-hit games and scored two or more runs in game three times for Albertus Magnus last week. She opened the week with a 2-for-3 showing with a triple, a stolen base and three runs scored in a 9-1 win against Lasell. Fortier ended the doubleheader with the Lasers by racking up a one hit, one RBI and two walks. In a doubleheader split with Rivier, she went 5-for-8 with five runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases. She is hitting .403 on the season and leads the team in hits (25), runs scored (16) and RBIs (10).
