East Boston, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College softball team split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader with Suffolk on Sunday afternoon at East Boston Memorial. The host Rams took the opener, 7-1, and the Falcons responded with an 8-2 triumph in the finale. The win in game two snapped a six-game losing streak for AMC.

Albertus Magnus moves to 15-9 overall and 6-6 in conference play, while Suffolk now sits at 16-6 on the spring and 7-3 in league action.

Game One
In the opener, Albertus Magnus got on the board first with a run in their first at-bat. After a Falcon stolen base, junior Rachel Cataudella (Shelton, Conn.) came around to score on a throwing error to give the guests a brief 1-0 edge.

In the bottom half of the frame, Suffolk plated two runs to take the lead for good. The Rams would keep the visitors off the board for the remainder of the game as Taylor Holmes tossed a complete game for her seventh win of the spring. Holmes kept the AMC bats off balance all afternoon, scattering four hits and striking out six hitters.

Game Two
Sophomore pitcher Megan Ferraro (Branford, Conn.) tossed a complete game and scattered seven hits to earn her team-leading ninth win of the season. Ferraro surrendered just one earned run and struck out one hitter, while retiring the side in order in the first and third innings.

Albertus Magnus wasted little time pushing runs across, plating four in the first and adding a single insurance run in both the second and third frames to take an early 6-0 edge. In the first, senior outfielder Alyssa Puccilli (Milford, Conn.) hit an RBI single up the middle and sophomore Melissa Castillo (Taftville, Conn.) brought runners home on the ensuing at-bat. Castillo reached on an error and came around to score as Suffolk threw the ball around.

In the second inning, sophomore Gillian Fortier (Naugatuck, Conn.) laced an RBI double to left field that brought junior Amanda Jessey (East Haven, Conn.) racing home. The team added another insurance run to build a 6-0 lead in the third as Jessey scored on a Ram miscue in the outfield.

The hosts got on the board in the fourth and added another run to pull within four at 6-2 in the sixth. The Falcons put the game out of reach in the seventh as junior Megan Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) and sophomore Daysia Wehder (Queens, N.Y.) hit back-to-back home runs.

With two hits in the nightcap, Puccilli moved into a tie with former teammate Brittney Urciuoli for the most hits (132) in program history.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, April 20, with a home conference doubleheader versus Anna Maria that gets underway at 3:00 pm. Last spring, the Falcons defeated the AMCATS, 23-8, thanks to a 16-run outburst in the top of the seventh.
