Helwig Scores Twice In Women's Lacrosse Loss To Lasell

NEWTON, Mass. - Samantha Helwig (Northford, Conn.) scored twice, but the Albertus Magnus College women's lacrosse team lost a 22-5 game to Lasell University on Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC).

It was the final road game for the Falcons who also got goals from Amber DeJonge (Grand Rapids, Mich.), Briony Retasket (Beaverton, Ore.) and Sarah Hofffman (Springfield, Va.).

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Lasell took an early 2-0 lead at the 12:19 mark the first period on goals from Teresa Kessner and Kaitlin Bedell before DeJonge scored as she spun on her defender and bounced a shot in to make it a 2-1 game at the 11:37 mark. Kessner scored three of the next five goals for Lasell as the Lasers took a 7-2 lead before Retasket took a behind the back shot into the net for her third goal of the season.
  • The Lasers led 10-2 after the first period after Jacquelyn Scopa scored the final two goals in the last 1:18. She opened the second with her third straight goal but Helwig responded with a free-position goal just 41 seconds later to make it an 11-3 game with 13:02 left. Bedell scored three of the next six goals for Lasell before Hoffman scored her first career goal on a free position shot.
  • Lasell closed the door in the third period, outshooting the Falcons, 4-0. Helwig added her second goal of the game at the 6:18 mark of the fourth on a free position shot.

NOTEWORTHY

  • It was the fifth game of the season that Helwig has scored at least two goals. She now leads the team with 21 goals.
  • The five goals were the most for the Falcons since March 26.
  • DeJonge had a career-high eight draw controls.
