Women's Volleyball Drops a Pair of Road Matches to New Rochelle and Rutgers-Newark

Newark, N.J. - The Albertus Magnus College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of road matches to the College of New Rochelle and Rutgers-Newark on Saturday afternoon in non-conference play at the Gold Dome.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Albertus Magnus and New Rochelle came out firing on all cylinders in the opening set as both teams battled through five ties before New Rochelle took over the lead 12-9, following a kill from Imani DeBose. The Blue Angels would remain in control and secure the first set win, 25-16.

Down 6-4, Albertus Magnus fought back on offense tying the frame at 6-6 and battling past the Blue Angels, 10-6. However, New Rochelle would regain the lead, 15-12, following a short spurt and forcing the Falcons to call a timeout. Albertus Magnus rallied within one, 19-18, but would fall short 25-18.

New Rochelle never looked back in the third and final set as the Blue Angels defeated the Falcons, 25-19.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • New Rochelle held a 32-23 edge in kills as well as a 6-4 edge in blocks.
  • Defensively, both Albertus Magnus and New Rochelle tallied four block assists a piece.
  • Senior Nicole Beard (Shelton, Conn.) recorded a season-high 14 assists.
  • Senior Ana Gomez (New Haven, Conn.), freshman Genesis Cora Luquis (Meriden, Conn.) and sophomore Delaney Ruiz (Meriden, Conn.) led the Falcons attack with a team-high six kills.
  • New Rochelle's Cristal Liciago recorded a double-double, 11 assists and 11 digs, while Imani DeBose led the offensive attack with 11 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Rutgers-Newark controlled the majority of set one until back-to-back kills from Gomez and Ruiz gave the Falcons their first lead of the match, 20-19. However, the Scarlet Raiders triumphed in the opening set, 25-21.

Up by one, 16-15, Albertus Magnus slowly began building momentum on offense and found themselves ahead by two, 20-18, but the Scarlet Raiders would close out the second set victory, 27-25, following a 9-5 run.

It was all Albertus Magnus in set three as the Falcons forced a fourth set after defeating the hosts 25-21.

Despite tying the final set, 14-14, Albertus Magnus fell in the final set 25-15.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • Cora Luquis recorded her second double-double of the season with a season-high 14 kills and 18 digs.
  • Albertus Magnus held a 49-42 edge in kills.
  • Rutgers-Newark led the Falcons in blocks, 14-6.
  • Gomez and sophomore Ashley David (West Islip, N.Y.) rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Falcons with 10.
  • Beard recorded a season-high 34 assists while sophomore Jesselle Guzman (Santa Fe, N.M.) tallied a team-high 24 digs.
