NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Throughout the fall semester, the Albertus Magnus College athletic department has dedicated itself to the four pillars (prayer, service, study, community) of its Dominican Catholic identity, and is participating in a host of different service activities, ranging from sports clinics to community outreach.
Most recently, the Falcons' tennis teams volunteered as instructors at the North Haven ACEing Autism program that Coach Bob Migliorni and his daughter Alyssa run together. The program, founded in 2008 and now in its 12th year, is designed to provide unique social and developmental benefits to children with autism. The program serves over 1,400 children with autism around the country and to date has 2,100 volunteers at 73 program locations. Coach Migliorini's chapter is about two-and-a-half years old and currently serves 13 children every Saturday.
"The ACEing Autism Program has provided a much needed program for an athletic activity as well as a social activity for children on the autism spectrum in New Haven county," said Coach Migliorni. "The women's tennis team has really enjoyed the opportunity to assist for a day and utilize their tennis skills to help others learn the game of tennis."
The Albertus Magnus tennis teams acted as volunteer instructors for the kids and helped them develop tennis skills such as hand-eye coordination, racket skills, volleys, and strokes. Throughout the program, the kids were provided with equipment and support, and were given opportunities to socialize and connect with others.
