NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Throughout the fall semester, the Albertus Magnus College athletic department has participated in various team service projects that coincide with the College's four pillars (prayer, study, service, community). The women's lacrosse and field hockey teams partnered together and worked with the United Way of Greater New Haven to show their appreciation for the frontline workers that continue to serve the New Haven community throughout the ongoing pandemic.
The United Way of Greater New Haven serves a 12-town network in the area and aims to create a measurable and lasting impact for communities in need, in addition to serving neighbors in a multitude of ways and identifying gaps in the community.
The field hockey and women's lacrosse programs wrote letters to the frontline workers that serve the New Haven community, wanting to show them some appreciation for all of their hard work during these uncertain times. "As a team, we thought it was important to thank all of the people that are on the frontlines of this pandemic and let them know that we do know what they are doing for all of us," said head women's lacrosse and field hockey coach Joe Caruso. "We do notice and appreciate it." Combined, the teams wrote more than 40 letters in support and appreciation of the frontline workers, and many of the athletes went above and beyond by writing multiple letters.
"While partnering with the Albertus Magnus women's field hockey and lacrosse teams for this letter-writing campaign, I was truly able to see how important the New Haven community is to them," said Dennis Velasquez, the volunteer coordinator of United Way of Greater New Haven. "Members of the team wrote meaningful letters to say thanks to community workers who have been on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is partnerships like this that are truly inspiring because it shows how something as simple and small as a letter can go a long way to bettering our community and making it a more positive environment for all."
