NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Kelvin Cortez (Meriden, Conn.) of the Albertus Magnus College men's soccer team and Shalese Gordon (Bridgeport, Conn.) of the women's volleyball team are this week's Falcon's Spotlight Players of the Week.
Kelvin Cortez has been on a tear as of late. In a 3-0 win over Elms on October 11, Cortez had a goal and two assists. Just three days later in a win over one of the top teams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC), Saint Joseph's (Me.), Cortez scored both goals. For his efforts, he was also named GNAC Player of the Week for the second time this season.
Cortez also had a two-goal outing against Regis in a 2-1 win on September 30. He also scored two goals - including the game-winner - and an assist at Lasell in a 3-2 win. He currently leads the GNAC in goals with ten and tied for first in points with 27.
Gordon has been on a run since the end of September, averaging 22.13 assists per match and 6.8 assists per set over her last eight matches.
She has had over 30 assists three times during the stretch, including 32 and 31 against Fitchburg and Curry, respectively during a tri-match on September 30. Her 32 assists were a career-high at the time. For her performance, she was named to the GNAC Weekly Honor Roll on October 9.
Gordon then surpassed her career-high in a 3-1 win over Anna Maria, tallying 34 assists. She is currently ninth in the GNAC with 4.90 assists per set.
