Falcons Split GNAC Doubleheader at Rivier College 7-0, 4-3

Nashua, NH - The Albertus Magnus College Baseball team earned a 7-0 Game one victory and saw their late inning rally fall short in Game two with a 4-3 loss in eight innings.

Game one featured a complete game complete game three hitter by freshman pitcher Brent Barth (Guilford, CT/Guilford) who walked just two and struck out five as the Falcons earned the 7-0 victory.  Juniors Rob Gambardella (North Haven, CT/North Haven) and Jon Almonte (New York, NY/LaSalle Academy) each had two hits for the Falcons including sophomore Matt Caputo (East Haven, CT/East Haven) to pace the offense.

Game two saw Albertus line out seven times throughout the contest and trailing 3-2 entering the top of the seventh inning.  Freshman infielder Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, CT/Northwest Catholic) singled to lead off the inning and stole second base reaching third on a wild pitch.  Fellow freshman Zak Sokolis (Meriden, CT/Maloney) singled in the tying run to make it 3-3 with a runner on first and no one out.  Pinch runner Joe Martinez (Bronx, NY/Leadership Institute) appeared to steal second base as he slid underneath the tag but was called out on a close play.  With one out, Albertus then grounded out and struck out to end the inning.  Rivier would go quietly in the bottom of the 7th while Albertus would go quietly in the top of the eighth inning.  Rivier took advantage of a Falcon error before sacrifice bunting the runner to second base.  A pinch hitter Kevin Romero (Waterbury, CT/Sacred Heart) then singled home the winning run, giving Rivier the walk-off 4-3 win.

Albertus improves to 5-18, 3-5 GNAC while Rivier improves to 3-18, 2-6 GNAC.
