Washington & Lee University scored three runs in the eighth inning to edge the Albertus Magnus baseball team 3-2 in the Falcons' 2012 season opener on Sunday afternoon in Lexington, Va.

The Falcons (0-1) took a 2-0 lead in the second inning and kept the Generals (6-8) off the scoreboard until their eighth-inning rally. In the second frame, freshman Fanol Prevalla (Berlin, Conn.) hit an RBI single up the middle to give the Falcons' an early two-run lead.

Zak Solokis (Meriden, Conn.) forced a lead-off walk to open the frame before moving to second on a Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.) single. A walk to Jon Almonte (New York, N.Y.) loaded the bases before Prevalla's two-out base hit.

Albertus' Matthew Finkenzeller (Wolcott, Conn.) had a solid outing for the Falcons and went 7.1 innings before leaving the contest. Finkenzeller gave up back-to-back hits to open the bottom of the eighth before newcomer Brian Levchuk (Branford, Conn.) took over on the mound. After an intentional walk, Levchuk gave up three-straight hits to allow the Generals to take the lead.

The Falcons recorded six hits on the afternoon, while Washington & Lee tallied 13. The Generals were led by Alex Maragos with a 4-for-4 performance. Nate Plein earned the win as he threw five innings of work and allowed two hits. Joe Gannett earned the save, his first of the year.

Gambardella, the Falcons' All-Conference Second Team selection from a year ago, finished the day 2-for-4, while Prevalla also went 2-for-4 in his collegiate debut as he added his first stolen base of the season.

The Falcons will face Christopher Newport on Tuesday afternoon in their next match-up. Game time is 2:00 p.m. against the Captains, who are ranked third in the country according to D3baseball.com.
