Falcons Earn First Win of 2012

Malcolm Mendez (New York, N.Y.) recorded a career-high six RBI as the Albertus Magnus baseball team picked up its first win of the 2012 season on Wednesday afternoon with a 13-6 victory over Mount Saint Mary College of New York.

Mendez went 3-for-5 with two runs scored as he led the Falcons to the non-conference victory. Albertus is now 1-6 on the year, while Mount Saint Mary falls to 7-6 overall.

Freshman Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) earned his first collegiate win for the Falcons as he threw six innings and gave up 10 hits and three earned runs. On the afternoon, he struck out four batters and walked two.

Albertus scored two runs in the first and four in the third to take a commanding 6-1 lead after 2.5 innings. The Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the third before Albertus added another run in the fifth and five in the seventh.

Both teams registered 15 hits on the afternoon, while five Falcons tallied multiple-hit performances.

Fanol Prevalla (Berlin, Conn.), Kyle Calechman (North Haven, Conn.) and Mendez each recorded three hits apiece. For Prevalla and Calechman, it was their team-best third multiple-hit contest this season.

In Albertus' four-run third inning, a Mendez single plated two Falcons before the senior scored on a wild pitch. The final run of the frame came off of an RBI single from freshman Pete Haggerty (South Windsor, Conn.) as Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.) scored the Falcons' sixth run of the ballgame.

In the Falcons' five-run seventh inning, back-to-back walks by Haggerty and Jon Almonte (New York, N.Y.) put the Falcons in striking distance to lead off the frame. An error by the Knights' infield loaded the bases for Prevalla, who singled and plated two more runners to extend the Falcons' lead. Calechman followed with an RBI double, his team-leading third double of the season, before Mendez registered two more RBI with a single to the outfield.

Prevalla finished the contest 3-for-5 with one run scored and four RBI, while Calechman went 3-for-5 with one RBI and three runs scored. Almonte added a two-hit effort as well as he also scored two runs.

Matthew Finkenzeller (Wolcott, Conn.) came out of the bullpen for the Falcons and threw two innings, while he allowed four hits and two earned runs. Nick Russo (Stamford, Conn.) closed the game out in the ninth as he gave up one hit and one run, while walking two batters.

The Falcons will travel to Westfield, Mass. on Thursday to take on the Westfield State Owls in a 3:30 p.m. non-conference ballgame.
