Albertus Baseball Downs Coast Guard 3-2 (6)

Led by two hits and an RBI from Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) the Albertus Magnus baseball team defeated Coast Guard 3-2 in six innings as the game was called due to darkness on Wednesday evening.

In the top of the first inning, the Falcons (2-7) scored first to take a 1-0 lead as Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) and Sokolis recorded back-to-back singles before an RBI single by Shane Osborn (Lake Worth, Fla.).  Albertus added two runs in the fifth as the Falcons took advantage of a walk and three hit batters as Sokolis picked up an RBI base hit to give Albertus a 2-0 lead. The second run in the frame came on a groundout from Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.).

The Bears scored in the bottom of the sixth and cut the Falcons' lead to one run as a double-steal attempt turned into an Albertus throw into left field which allowed Coast Guard to score its first run of the frame. Following that play, Mike Massaro recorded an RBI single to cut the Albertus advantage to 3-2.

Albertus' Ryan Fowler (Cheshire, Conn.) threw all six innings as he allowed five hits, two earned runs and two walks, while he struck out six in the win.

Coast Guard used four pitchers in the contest as Derek Petty recorded his first loss of the season after starting the year 3-0.

The Bears are now 10-6 on the year following the loss.

Albertus will host Norwich on Saturday, March 30 in the Falcons' 2013 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opener.  Game one of the double-header is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. at Quigley Stadium in West Haven, Conn.
