Gambardella Lifts Falcons to 17-5 Win over Mt. St. Mary

The Albertus Magnus baseball team recorded 17 runs on 17 hits en route to a 17-5 non-conference victory over Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) on Tuesday night in West Haven.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 7-11 on the year, while the Knights fall to 8-10 overall.

The Falcons struck early with two runs in the bottom of the first inning as Mount Saint Mary's Kevin Riveiro walked the first three batters of the frame. Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.) scored the Falcons' first run of the night on a wild pitch after stealing third to get into scoring position.  Later in the inning, Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) scored on the first hit of the ballgame, an infield single by Robert Gambardella (North Haven, Conn.).

The Knights put their first run on the board in the top of the second as a double to the center field wall by Alec Seidman plated Thomas McNoble from second base.

The Falcons had the bases loaded in the second and plated three runs on three-consecutive two-out walks by Anthony Pellegrino (Branford, Conn.), Shane Osborn (Lake Worth, Fla.) and Gambardella.

Riveiro was pulled from the game in the second inning after allowing four runs on three hits and six walks in 1.2 innings of work. Zach Kenny came out of the bullpen for the Knights and walked Gambardella before getting out of the inning.

Mount Saint Mary tallied a run in the fourth and another in the fifth to cut the Falcons' lead to 5-3.

Albertus answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning led by RBI hits from Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) and freshman Arber Mehmedi (Naugatuck, Conn.).  Sokolis added two RBI in the frame with a single to right field.

The Falcons added six runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to take a 17-3 lead before the Knights recorded two runs in the top of the ninth.

Daniel Kmiechick (Barnegat, N.J.) made his first start of the season on the hill for the Falcons and threw 7.2 innings of work en route to his first victory of the season. He allowed 11 hits and three runs, while striking out three batters.  Junior Richard McLain (Guilford, Conn.) finished the game for the Falcons as he gave up two runs on two hits and two walks.

Gambardella finished the night 4-for-4 with two walks and five RBI.  Kubilus added four hits and two RBI.  Mehmedi also had three hits and two RBI, while Sokolis and Pellegrino both chipped in with two RBI in the contest.

Next up for the Falcons will be a non-conference match-up in Danbury, Conn. at Western Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon.
