Walk-Off Single Lifts Suffolk over Falcons 9-8

With a walk-off game-winning single by Adam Johnson, the Suffolk University Rams slipped past the Albertus Magnus baseball team 9-8 in game one of the Monday evening doubleheader. With the Falcons leading 8-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, the Rams scored three runs in the final frame to take the league victory.

Mike Cunningham led the Rams with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate and three RBI as he registered his eighth home run of the year in the opening frame to give Suffolk a 3-0 lead.  The Rams' fourth run in the frame came on an RBI single by Mike Muse.

Albertus answered with six runs in the second inning thanks to four hits and two Suffolk errors.  Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) singled to lead off the inning before moving to third on a Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.) base hit. After Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.) walked to load the bases, Nick Sedia (Bronx, N.Y.) walked in a run for his sixth RBI of the season.

An error by the Suffolk infield allowed another Falcon to score before Zak Sokolis (Meriden, Conn.) added to his stellar season with another RBI single for Albertus.

Albertus added two more runs in the top of the fifth before Suffolk tallied two in the bottom of the frame.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, Albertus held an 8-6 lead. Daniel Kmiechick (Barnegat, N.J.) hit the first batter he faced in the seventh before freshman Tyler Donnan (Meriden, Conn.) took over out of the bullpen.  Cunningham connected for a double to put two runners into scoring position before another hit batter loaded the bases.

With no outs, Muse singled in a run before a ground out scored the tying run. After an intentional walk, Johnson connected on his game-winning RBI single.

Kmiechick allowed 14 hits and seven runs on the night as he struck out two in six innings of work. Donnan took the loss to fall to 1-3 on the year.

Sophomore Jake Rosner earned the win for Suffolk as he threw five innings of relief, striking out three while not allowing an earned run.
