Falcons Win Nightcap 7-5 over Anna Maria

Despite a late-inning rally by Anna Maria, the Albertus Magnus baseball team cruised to a 7-5 victory in game two of the Thursday night Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) double-header at West Haven High School.

The Falcons improve to 7-6 on the year and 2-0 in GNAC play with the win, while Anna Maria falls to 3-10 overall and 0-2 in league play.

Albertus jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second inning led by a bases clearing double by Patrick Dornfried (Berlin, Conn.).  Kris Daur-Schierholz (East Haven, Conn.), who finished the contest 2-for-3 with 1 RBI, scored in the frame and knocked in one with a single through the left-side of the infield.

Anna Maria scored its first runs of the series with two runs in the top of the fifth inning.  John Sullivan walked to record an RBI, while David Julian added an RBI single to cut the Falcons' lead to 5-2.

The Falcons added two runs in the bottom of the frame led by a two-RBI single by Sage Leonard (Northford, Conn.).

The Falcons held a five-run advantage heading into in the final inning before Anna Maria began its late-inning rally, scoring three runs on two hits, before the Falcons recorded the last out of the ballgame.

Jordan Kubilus (Cheshire, Conn.) earned the win for the Falcons as he improved to 2-0 on the year.  Kubilus threw four innings as he allowed two runs, one earned, on two hits and two walks. He also struck out three.

Mike Barillaro (Meriden, Conn.) took the mound with two runners on in the fifth and recorded the first out on one pitch.  After two runs scored for the AMCats, a fly out to center and a groundout to the pitcher got the Falcons out of the jam.

Daur-Schierholz took the hill in the seventh to close out the game for the Falcons. After striking out the first two batters faced, Anna Maria recorded two hits before a groundout to the pitcher ended the game.

Andrew Sawyer picked up his first loss of the season for Anna Maria as he fell to 2-1 on the year.  He allowed seven runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings of work. He also walked four and struck out three.  Corey McNair finished the contest 2-for-4 with two RBI for the AMCats.

Albertus will head to Johnson & Wales on Saturday for a GNAC doubleheader. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
