Myrtle Beach, S.C. – The Albertus Magnus College baseball team ended its spring break trip in South Carolina with doubleheader sweep of Principia College on Thursday afternoon at Ebbetts Field in the Ripken Experience. The Falcons took the opener, 6-2, and scored a walk-off, 6-5, victory in the nightcap.

With the sweep, AMC has now won five straight games and returns to the Constitution State with a 5-4 overall record, while the Panthers have now dropped four in a row to sit at 2-8 on the spring.

In the opener, Albertus Magnus freshman hurler Malachi Emond (Coventry, Conn.) tossed a complete game to earn his first collegiate win. Emond was impressive on the bump, striking out a career-high 11, while surrendering just one earned run. For Principia, Aleq McMullin was saddled with the loss after tossing six plus innings and allowing five earned runs.

The Falcons jumped on McMullin early, plating a pair in the top of the first as senior catcher Ted Gravel (Morris, Conn.) had an RBI groundout and classmate Tyler Robertson (Cheshire, Conn.) came around later in the frame to score on an error. In the bottom half of the stanza, the Panthers would cut the deficit in half courtesy of RBI single from Jake Kearney.

From there, both teams were scoreless until the sixth and seventh as Albertus added four insurance runs in the frames. In the bottom of the seventh, Principia plated one run, taking an advantage of a Falcon error, but Emond was able to induce a fiedler's choice to seal the win.

In the finale, freshman Derwin Nunez (Bridgeport, Conn.) laced a two-out double that brought classmate Dean Gullo (Northford, Conn.) charging home for the game-winning run.

AMC junior Christopher Rivera (New Britain, Conn.) worked the final two innings on the mound to pick up the win for the Falcons.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, March 23, with a home non-conference doubleheader against Elm that gets underway at 3:00 pm. Prior to the first game against the Blazers the AMC athletic department will hold a special opening day ceremony at the new home of Falcon baseball, Rochford Field, in neighboring Hamden.
