Westfield, Mass. – The Albertus Magnus College baseball team split a non-conference doubleheader versus Westfield State on Saturday afternoon at Bud & Jim Hagan Field. The visiting Falcons took the opener, 12-3, and the Owls answered with a 4-1 triumph in the nightcap.

Albertus Magnus moved to 6-7 on the year with the split, while Westfield State now sits at 8-8 overall.

In game one, AMC freshman hurler Malachi Emond (Coventry, Conn.) tossed a complete game to earn his second collegiate win. Emond struck out six hitters and scattered six hits, while retiring the side in order in both the fourth and sixth innings.

The hosts jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI fielder's choice from Nate Barnes. The visitors answered by putting crooked numbers on the scoreboard in the third and fourth innings.

In the five-run top of the third, senior catcher Mike Saia (Bridgeport, Conn.) roped a 2-run double to left center and freshman shortstop Mike Browne (New Fairfield, Conn.) followed with a 2-run single for Albertus Magnus.

In the fourth, the Falcons plated six runs as the Owls walked four hitters, two of the walks to Saia and Browne came with bases load to score runs, and a Steven Lockman (Wallingford, Conn.) ground ball to third was misplayed to allow two more runs to score. Albertus Magnus added an insurance run thanks to a sac fly to center field by senior infielder Justin Poirier (Meriden, Conn.).

In the bottom of the fifth, Westfield State freshman OF Anthony Crowley doubled to left field to score two runs from DiMatteo and Kyle Murphy to cut the lead to 12-3 and cap the scoring.

In the finale, the Owls plated all four of their runs in the first two innings and kept the Falcon offense at bay to escape with a split.

Barnes' first inning single plated Christian Morales to give Westfield a 2-0 lead.  A frame later, Barnes once again again brought Morales home, this time with a line shot that knocked the glove off the hand of AMC starter Mike Terzi (Wallingford, Conn.) to give Westfield a 4-0 lead.

Lockman walked to open the fifth inning for the guests and eventually came around to score from third on a wild pitch for the lone Falcons fun of the game.

Terzi took the loss for Albertus, going the distance and allowing four runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out five.

Albertus Magnus returns to action on Wednesday, March 30, with a road non-conference clash versus in-state rival Coast Guard. The tilt with the Bears gets underway at 3:30 pm.
