Baseball Swept by Anna Maria in GNAC Action

PAXTON, Mass. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team suffered a doubleheader setback to the AMCATS of Anna Maria College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon. The AMCATS took game one by a final score of 7-0 before securing the nightcap by a final score of 5-3. 

Nick Ramos (Mineola, N.Y.) and Joseph Cortes (Bridgeport, Conn.) led the Falcons offensively, as the duo collected two hits apiece. Ramos worked three walks and scored a run, while Cortes tallied an RBI and a double.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 1

  • Sean Jefferson (West Haven, Conn.) worked a two-out walk in the top of the first inning but was stranded when Anna Maria's Nick Choate struck out the next hitter to end the frame.  
  • Anna Maria scored two runs in the bottom of the first on two hits to take the early 2-0 lead. 
  • Ramos worked a walk in the top of the second and advanced on a passed ball but was stranded when Choate slammed the door with a strikeout. 
  • Tyler Baldwin (Cromwell, Conn.) turned the AMCATS away without a run in the bottom of the second, hurling a 1-2-3 inning that included a strike 'em out, throw ' em out double play.
  • Choate mystified the Falcons in the top of the third inning, striking out three straight hitters to keep the Falcons off the board.    
  • Anna Maria added to its lead in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice flyout to take a 3-0 lead into the top of the fourth inning. 
  • In the top of the fourth, Jason Sullivan (Meriden, Conn.) reached on a hit-by-pitch but was left on base when Choate retired the next two hitters. 
  • The AMCATS added to their lead with a four-run fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead into the fifth frame. 
  • Tristan Smith (Salem, Conn.) relieved Baldwin in the fifth and hurled back-to-back scoreless innings to keep the deficit at seven. 
  • Choate held the Falcons scoreless for the final three innings to seal the 7-0 victory for the AMCATs.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS - Game 2

  • The AMCATs took the early lead in game two, scoring two runs on two hits in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. 
  • Christian Corliss (Burlington, Conn.) held Anna Maria scoreless in the second inning, working out of a jam to keep the deficit at two. 
  • Ramos led off the third inning with a hit-by-pitch, but the Falcons could not move him around. Corliss picked his teammate up with a 1-2-3 third inning, and the teams transitioned into the fourth inning. 
  • Anna Maria tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it a 3-0 game. 
  • With two outs in the fifth inning, Ramos singled up the middle and was followed up by a Cortes double to put runners on second and third. Back-to-back walks from Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Ron Losacano (Old Lyme, Conn.) scored a run for the Falcons, but Anna Maria hurler Jack Marzec got a strikeout to end the frame. 
  • The AMCATs tacked on an additional run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead, and the teams moved to the sixth inning. 
  • AJ Rooks (Coventry, Conn.) relieved Corliss on the mound and struck out the side in the sixth to keep the AMCAts off the board. 
  • Ramos worked a walk in the seventh, but Marzec retired the next two hitters to strand the runner. The AMCATs scored an additional run in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 5-1 contest. 
  • The pitchers controlled the eighth inning, as neither team could add tallies to the score, and the squads moved to the ninth and final inning. 
  • Sullivan led off the top of the ninth with a single to center field and was pulled for pinch runner Aidan Kane (Middlebury, Conn.). An errant pitch nailed Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) to put two on with none out for the Falcons. 
  • King Rivera (Bridgeport, Conn.) pinch-ran for Smith. With one out, Ramos laced a single to left field to load the bases. 
  • Back-to-back singles from Cortez and Arent scored two runs for the Falcons before the AMCATs retired the final two hitters to neutralize the threat and secure the 5-3 victory.

The Falcons return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 26th for a doubleheader with the Cadets of Norwich University. Game times are set for 2 PM and 4:30 PM at Rochford Field in Hamden, Conn.
