Baseball Splits With Colby-Sawyer

NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team split a doubleheader with Colby-Sawyer, dropping game one, 16-8 in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) game before winning game two, 12-7. 

Anthony Acampora (North Haven, Conn.) and King Rivera (Bridgeport, Conn.) each drove in two runs in the second game as Albertus scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 6-6 tie.

In the first game, Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.) and Eric Galarza (Bridgeport, Conn.) each homered and Vance Ward (Norwalk, Conn.) drove in two runs, but the Chargers used a seven-run second inning to catapult them to the win.

The games were played at Colby-Sawyer, but Albertus Magnus was the home team.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The two teams matched scores in the first inning as the Chargers jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on an RBI double from Cam Carignan and an RBI single by Nick Johnson. It took just one swing from Spataj to tie the game in the bottom of the inning, hitting a two-run homer to left field that scored Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.), who singled with one out. It was Spataj's sixth homer of the season.
  • Colby-Sawyer opened the game up in the second inning as the first six batters reached base, leading to three runs. The Chargers would score four more times in the inning capped by a bases loaded two-run double by Sean Roeger to give them an 8-2 lead. Noah Staffier added an RBI single for the final tally of the inning.
  • Albertus got a run back in the bottom of the second but still trailed 9-3 and the two teams once again would swap two runs in the third inning a Cooper O'Brien hit a two-run homer in the top of the third for the Chargers and Galarza hit a solo homer to go with a Ward RBI single to make it an 11-5 game.
  • The Falcons rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning to creep closer as Troy Piascik (East Haven, Conn.) and Bobby Arent (Ridgefield, Conn.) hit back-to-back doubles to make it an 11-6 game. Two batters later, Ward hit another RBI single, while Abate added one of his own in the inning. 
  • Colby-Sawyer added one more run in the sixth but shut the door on any comeback attempt, scoring four runs in the top of the ninth that included a Finn Maclennan two-run single.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After a scoreless first inning, the Falcons scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning as Abate hit an RBI single to score Piascik, who doubled to lead off the inning. Jason Sullivan followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a two-run game and Spataj hit an RBI single to score Colin Telford (Branford, Conn.) who walked earlier in the inning.
  • A sacrifice fly by O'Brien and an RBI single from Mike Mcleer in the top of the third cut the Albertus lead to one, but after Galarza reached base on an error and then went to third on an error on a pickoff attempt, Arent hit a sacrifice fly to make it a 4-2 game.
  • Albertus took control in the bottom of the fourth with two more runs, including an RBI single from Shawn Smith, making it a 6-2 game. The Chargers started the top of the fifth with three straight singles, the final one an RBI single from Maclennan. Maclennan eventually would score on a wild pitch making it a 6-4 game. A double steal gave the Chargers another run and an RBI single from Jack Martese tied the game at 6-6.
  • The Falcons batted around in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Falcons walked four times to go with six hits. After pinch running for Spataj, King scored on a wild pitch to give Albertus the lead back at 7-6. With two outs in the inning, the Falcons scored five more runs including two run singles by both Acampora and King to give Albertus a 12-6 lead. The Chargers added one more run in the top of the seventh.
