Baseball Drops Both Ends Of Doubleheader Against Mitchell

HAMDEN, Conn. - The Albertus Magnus College baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader to Mitchell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) tilt on Saturday at Rochford Field, 15-4 and 13-3.

Shawn Smith (Shelton, Conn.) hit a homer in game one and Adriel Espada (Bridgeport, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run in game one.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Albertus starting pitcher Albert Molina (Terryville, Conn.) set down the top of the order of the Mitchell lineup in the first inning and the Falcons were able to put a run on the board in the bottom half on an RBI groundout by Anthony Abate (Naugatuck, Conn.).
  • Espada gave the Falcons a 2-0 lead on an RBI single that scored Colin Telford (Branford, Conn.), who singled to lead off the bottom of the third inning.
  • Mitchell tied the game in the top of the fourth on RBI singles by Braiden Alaimo and Chas Terni, Jr. 
  • Smith launched his second homer of the season - a two-run shot - to put Albertus up once again, 4-2 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Mariners took the lead in the top of the fifth on a two-run homer in the top of the fifth by Kennth Miller, Jr. Miller, Jr. then followed it up with another homer in the top of the seventh to take a 6-4 lead.
  • Mitchell blew the game open with six runs in the top of the eighth, which included a two-run double by Terni, Jr. The Mariners added three more runs in the ninth.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Mitchell jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first inning that included a two-run single by Thai-ler Sestokas in the top of the frame. In the bottom of the inning, the Falcons got a run back on an RBI single by Elijah Spataj (Cheshire, Conn.)
  • The Mariners scored four more runs in the top of the second to take an 8-1 lead as Terni, Jr. hit the first of his three run homers, a two-run shot.
  • Mitchell scored one more run in the third and one more in the fourth on a solo homer from Terni, Jr.
  • The Falcons scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth, making it a 10-2 game.
  • Miller, Jr. hit his third homer of the day and Terni, Jr. hit his third homer of the game in the top of the sixth to make it a 13-2 game.
  • Albertus added one more run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the sixth.
